swim Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 I am wondering if anyone can give me their thoughts on using Keflex vs Zithromax or on dosage strategies. Our pediatrician put our 10 year old son on Keflex. At 500mg a day, we saw improvement in symptoms after 3 or 4 days. After 2 weeks at 500mg, she switched him to 30 days at 250mg. After about 10 days, we started seeing tic movements come back, so I asked to get him back on 500mg. Our new strategy is 500mg a day for 3 months and then evaluate reducing to 250mg. Any thoughts on doses or the 3 month plan? It seems most people are using Zithromax. Has anyone tried Keflex? Any comments on Keflex vs Zithromax? Last thing, we are very worried about candida because of long term antibiotic use. We have been through the candida battle before. Does anyone have any good recommendations on probiotics? Thanks for any help!!!
dcmom Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Hi Swim, I can just tell you what we have done: We dabbled with other antibiotics, that had some effectiveness, before we went to a 20 day treatment dose of zithromax. At that pt dd was at like 90-95% better. She then went to 400mg per week (she is tiny, like 40lbs). That was working REALLY well, untill she had her tonsils out (now we are having some symptoms again). This advice is coming from a great and interested neurologist! We are trying to avoid yeast issues, as per advice on this forum, with 1/4 cup of kefir a day (mixed in a yummy sorbet/ frozen fruit smoothie). Hope this helps a little....
swim Posted June 30, 2009 Author Report Posted June 30, 2009 DC Mom - thanks for sharing - how long did you do 400 mg a week
dut Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Hello. Re the yeast, our environmental doc told us we needed to be on high, high doses of probiotics... I've even read some docs say up at 70 billion or so per day. We seem to do ok on 30-40+ billion acidophilus and bifidus (we use pharmax HLC brand) and 250mg of saccharomyces boulardii (we use florastor) daily but our dd is only on 500mg zith per week. We also try to add in the Goodbelly probiotic drink ,also got some vitamin in especially the Bs, yoghurts and kefir for variety but the kefir is a hard sell for us even in smoothies.. dunno why..

Thanks for any help!!! Our dr. just put us on 10 day treatment of clyndomycin 3 times a day. We are new to all of this, so I am not sure how it will work. We had a strep infection that appeared to cause PANDAS symptoms a yr ago, and then our son improved within the year to almost 100%. Now we have another suspected case of strep and are seeing some slight behaviors come back so we talked the dr into antibiotics. We'll see how this works. I hope yours works out too. Let me know.
