bmom Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 We have upped my son from the 250 mg to 500 mg of Augmentin daily. The pharmacist gave us the 500 mg pills. My question is would you break it in half and do 250 mg every 12 hours or would you do one pill in the morning? I do a probiotic daily and kefir which we do in the afternoon to not interfere with the anitibiotic, but the most important to us is to keep the antibiotic effective in the system. What do you think? We give it around 9 am and he is usually in bed by 9:30 pm so I dont know if that would be needed in the evening.
chrisw Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Hi Bmom, I just switched my son from Azith 250mg. a day to 500mg. Augmentin on this past Thurs. Dr. K let us continue on the Azith until school got out, then he wanted us to go to Augmentin. Those 500mg. pills are HUGE! Fortunately, my son doesn't have a problem swallowing it (this seems like a small miracle of which I am extremely grateful!) and takes it at bedtime. So far, I have not noticed a difference in his behavior since the switch. He is still doing very well (post IVIG) and we are enjoying him more every day. Dr. K wrote the px for 1 time daily, every morning. Does this leave him exposed? Now I am wondering the same thing. And, since he takes it at bedtime (which is just easier for us to remember) is he more suseptible during the day? Any thoughts? Christie
P_Mom Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Hi Guys! All I know is that dr.K wanted us to give it in the a.m. because their risk of exposure is greatest during the day, of course. I am not sure if I gave it once a day I would give it in the p.m., although I do know of one Mom who gives it at night, (one 500 mg pill of Keflex), and her son has been fine for years. As far as breaking it in half and giving it twice a day..... you may be losing some effectiveness from the c. acid that is in it.....it would be lesser than that in a 250 mg pill...right??
