JenniferG
Long 2 months. Christmas +rapid strep on Aug 300/2xday (Sons are 40lbs). That was their Maintenance dose. Put on Azith x5d. Throat better but sinus and ear infection. Changed to Omnicef...10 days later. ...still ear infection and sinus infection..change to Bactrim. OK but not 100%. Then Starts to complain of dizziness and nausea...Monday Left bulging raging ear infection and sinus infection...-rapid strep. Sinuses FINALLY start to drain. Amongst all of this starts to complain that everything that he eats he feels like he is going to choke. Tonight he is complaining of a headache and out of nowhere says his throat hurts really bad when he swallows. Temp 100. I did a home rapid strep...positive!! On Clindamycin. Tonsils are bigger than normal and have white junk on them.. Thoughts????? I thought Clindamycin was the be all, end all??
Rachel
What is a home rapid strep test? I have never heard of this. Please share. I don't know if this antibiotic is in the same family of Azthromyican but my son caught strep while on Azthro 250 mg a day.
JenniferG
You can buy rapid strep kits online. They are the same as the ones the Pedi uses. We went in today. She is speechless. She suggested maybe ER visit with a shot of Rocephin....but then said if I had it here I would give it, but I don't want to send you to the ER....We have an appointment on Monday with Dr. Gail Szackas...hopefully she can sort this out. He had a 101 fever this AM. Gone now on Motrin. Sinuses are draining well and ears look much improved, so the Pedi did not want to change anything. Is it possible that the test was positive strictly because of the strep draining down the back of his throat....and not actually "strep throat". But why the sudden onset of a fever? searching_for_help
My dd tested positive for strep on 4 different abx. No one could really explain it, and it was obvious they didn't want to deal with it anymore! She doesn't have the usual signs of strep - for my dd it's usually a little bit of nausea. She gets more anxiety and intrusive thoughts instead of all the physical stuff. I'm sure she did a week each of penicillin, Clindamycin, Amoxicillin and one other I can't remember... The nurse practitioner was so flustered she sent us to the hospital lab to have them swab her! We went ahead and did a T & A, hoping that would help stop the anxiety, etc., if strep was the culprit - but it didn't do anything but cause weeks of horrible pain. (She's 20, and it's MUCH harder on adults than kids!) BTW - when she was testing positive, she didn't have any drainage. cobbiemommy
Clindamycin did not cure my son's impetigo (strep), but it did calm down the worst of the tics. He also got the impetigo while taking prophylactic Keflex. We are about to start Bactim so I know what you are talking about with this resistant strep. Sigh... Maybe it is time for for you to see an immunologist? Edited February 24, 2014 by cobbiemommy
