Hrosenkrantz
Hi -- my seven year old son is experiencing extreme hyperactivity now. Exercise and diet not really helping. Are there any supplements that are really effective at addressing this? He's been on a low dose of risperdone for two months to address some extreme raging, but the rages are pretty much gone. I'd like to change his medicine from that to something like intuive to address the hyperactivity, but i'm unlikely to get to a doctor for the next several weeks and i'd like something to help during the holiday period. I've been told zinc supplements address attention. Any other thoughts? My husband wanted to try DMG, but we had bad luck with adderall last year, and his neuro said ADD meds are bad for these kids, so I'm hesitant on DMG. One thing is that my son really fights me on the medicines we give him (supplements over the years have always been a fight) so i'd like to reserve the effort for something that really works (we have focused our energies on abx and steroids; the risperdone he doesn't mind taking)... LNN
For us it depended on what was causing the hyperactivity. When it was from a PANS flare, motrin helped the most. Phosphatidylserine (100mg twice a day) helped a lot with focus but less so for hyper motion. When yeast was our culprit, Diflucan helped some and nystatin helped a lot. Hopeny
I have seem a huge turnaround with my non pandas dd with enhansa, I had no expectations and was using for immune health but have seem a phenomenal improvement in behavior, attention etc I know others have not always had a good experience but it may be something to considers. There is good info on the lee silsby site.
Hrosenkrantz
llm -- how does one know if yeast is an issue? I can probably get to a doctor in the next couple of days to test for that.
LNN
There's a blood test for antibodies against candida albicans you can request. However, there are a lot of strains beyond candida that can cause yeast hyperactivity et al. If that's negative, you can do a stool test - but results takes a few weeks. At times, I just treated based on symptoms (drunken silliness and hyperness) with 1000mg odorless garlic capsules. Many times, that did the trick and the silliness subsided over 3-7 days. You need to also restrict sugars and carbs as much as possible to not feed the yeast. L-glutamine supplements also help repair the mucus lining of the intestines and can reduce leaky gut symptoms, but it took a few weeks to see any change. The glutamine wasn't an overnight thing. pr40
another thing to consider: are you giving too much of something? my kids go hyper with too much B vitamins, esp b12.
