LexMom
My son's onset was so abrupt, even he acknowledged it was not normal. Of course, he was older. It took a lot of doctors before we found a doctor who treated it as PANDAS and, even still, they treat it as PANDAS but will not name it as such. 4Nikki
Our school district is not very well informed on how to handel any of the pandas/pans symptoms. We dont trust them with DD
JoyBop
4nikki in that case you should have the school focus on the intermittent OCD and anxiety symptoms of "pandas". They don't have to know about the autoimmune part bc the kids still need to be treated for and accommodated for their symptoms. I have told our school about the pandas but make them outline a plan to help him when OCD. Anxiety. Hyperactivity and impulsivity strike. I let them know at times he will be well and other times he won't, please see our doctors notes that this is dependent upon a medical disorder. That's all they need to know. That, and to inform you of strep outbreaks in school. Sometimes people are hesitant to say my kid has a mental illness bc there is such a stigma attached. It sounds better to say autoimmune disorder, but at the end of the day, it causes much less trouble and is far more direct to name the visable conditions the school has an obligation to teach to. 4Nikki
I agree, Actually, I have been trying to feed the school district with info about identifing anxieity from the state groups desiminating to the selpa's. My wife has way too much passion about our daughter so I've taken a different course because school management doesn't get it, The school machine cant make the connections fast enough for children with complex issues and while I can avdocate to help identify other children with anxieity issues, I've been concentrating on getting our daughter services for home schooling and other services through the regional offices. It's been working but it's slow.
