T_Anna
DS is on Valtrex and it is helping combat his Coxsackie. But I see many here are treating with Acyclovir. Any input which is more effective? TIA, T.Anna
cobygurl
Hi, I honestly don't which is more effective. I think Valtrex is stronger? At least that is the impression I was given by my doctor and he wanted to try the Acyclovir first. My son is 4. We are on day 19 of 20 of Acyclovir and I would say it has helped some. My son still has tics (skin picking, scratching, adjustig clothes, shoulder shrugging) so the 2 rounds of Acyclovir (10days each) hasn't knocked his coxsackie out but we could be dealing with other issues too. How has the Valtrex been for you? Does your son have tics? If you would please keep me posted, I'd love to know how you make out with the Valtrex. Also, if anyone has had to stay on more than 2roubds of Acyclovir, I would love to know! Thanks!
T_Anna
We have been on Valtrex since April and it has helped lower hisCoxsackie numbers. We went off when we saw the numbers decline and wanted to concentrate on MycoP, but he started to react badly so we put him back on Valtrex. So far so good. He does have finger tics and some others, but I haven't noticed how they've changed. We have had blood tests to monitor how his body is dealing with all the medication (Augmentin, Valtrex, Biaxin, Diflucan, etc). 3boysmom
Our son was doing fairly well on Augmentin XR 1000 x 2 until the coxsackie virus in November. Didn't know what infection we had until February and so then he was put on Valtrex. This helped with the néw loud vocal tics that he got with the coxsackie virus. The problem was that the Valtrex was $350. a month. In the mean time I inquired about acyclovir for attention and the doctor said they were almost exactly the same thing and so he could not be on both at the same time. He did change him to Acyclovir because it is only $40. a month because it is not prescribed as much any more. The dose needs to be higher with Acyclovir. Our DS is 13 and 5.6 feet and 135 pounds....Instead of Valtrex 1000 x 2, he is now on Acyclovir 800 MG x 4 (2 in the morning = 1600 and 2 in the evening = 1600). Started the change on June 5 and I do believe he is actually doing better. His vocal tics that began in November were improved greatly with Valtrex but were still obvious and made it difficult to talk. It seems that he is struggling less to speak and I am not hearing the loud gasps for air as often. Hope that helps.
