croatianmum
I just wrote a previous post about my son's ASO, and it was before reading a post from Buster explaining the ASO very well. Butafter reading Buster's post, (and maybe it's because of the language), I would like to clearly understeand one thing. My son's ASO is 260, and he has a strong exerbation for the last 3 weeks. So, the question is: no metter if ASO is rising, or falling - elevated ASO is still pointing that something in his body reacted to strep? he can not have ASO higher than normal if there is /was absolutely NO strep ? So, ASO is an answer of antibody's to strep?
Mayzoo
ASO tests are not 100% accurate in determining whether a person has had a recent strep infection. For example, my daughter's ASO was 6 and her DNASE was <95 while she was in the middle of a 45 day strep infection. Her body apparently does not fight off strep well. However, a high ASO is a great indicator of recent infection. Here is a good site that explains what the ASO test is for: http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/aso/tab/test "The ASO test is primarily ordered by itself or along with an anti-DNase B to help determine whether a person has had a recent streptococcal infection." croatianmum
thank You. I jut got results from another lab, and there is ASO even higher it's 275; dnaseB is negative. but, again, it is a confiramtion that he had a some kind of contact with strep? oivay
My daughter's levels never rose, even when she actually had strep, and she would get strep fairly often, which was documented by rapid strep tests and/or cultures. She had blood tests for ASO, dnase, etc. at least once a month during her exacerbations and afterward. The way it was explained to me at the time was that this would suggest she had a selective immunodeficiency toward strep, as in the midst of a fully documented strep infection, you would assume titer levels would rise, but hers did not. Yes, rising titer indicates some kind of contact w/strep, even if just exposure.
