Hi, My son has been on keflex for about 2 months now and has developed some pretty bad diarahea. The dr. suggested putting him back on amoxicillian but he had episodeds when he was on that and so far has not had any problems on the keflex. School is about to start and I want him to stay on the keflex, but I also need to stop the diarahea. What can I do to help with the stomach issues without taking him off the meds?

probiotics? I dont know anything about that. Should he be on some sort of probiotic to prevent the stomach issue? Is that something that the dr. has to prescribe?

You can buy them at most grocery stores and pharmacies. If your child eats yogurt, that should help. Florastor is a brand name for Saccharomyces boulardii lyo. DS only takes it once a day - and the pills cost close to $1 each, so it is not inexpensive. But, for him, it results in no digestive issues and it restores good bacteria to his digestive track that gets killed by the antibiotics. If your child does not take pills, I think they have it in a powder form. And there are many other probiotics in either pill or powder form (like Culturelle) that might do the trick. Warning - the first 36 hours on probiotics, the symptoms might get a tiny bit worse. Then they should resolve.

10 day abx of flagyl may help he may have overgrowth of clostridia. Probitics will help the best strain for diarhea is lactobicillus from what I have read.

Hi - we also use Florastor. It is a good yeast that crowds out bad yeast like candida albicans.

You will also need to backfill with beneficial bacteria. Probiotic supplements should be spaced 3 hours away from antibiotics so that the antibiotics don't kill it off.

My kids have done really well with one called 'HLC high potency powder' by a company called Pharmax. You will probably have to order it online. It contains a couple of good strains. Other folks also seem to like Custom Probiotics. They do a number of different products that you will need to order too.

We also try to get kefir and other fermented foods in them. They also really like a product called 'Kevita' and some of the kombucha drinks. They all have added sugar though. If he will eat it, good quality sauerkraut is just jam packed with beneficial bacteria. We try to go for good quality supplements and lots of added probiotics in food and drink.

You may want to be careful as some parents report issues with yoghurts as they contain a strep thermophillus (sp?) strain that some think may trigger flares of PANDAS although for us that hasn't been an issue.

My ds4 does get diarrhea on antibiotics if I'm not really on it. He also has had clostridia difficile but if I get the supps and as much extra from food and drink in him as he can happily stomach, we don't get any issues.

Good luck....
