My dd does self talk when she's in the tub or shower. She actually repeats all the things she knows she's not supposed to be anxious about, intermixed with a little singing from Adele. Seriously tho, it's like she's played back all the "beat OCD" techniques we have been inundating her with. I think the water relaxes her so completely that she can release all the pent up stress of getting through the day. Can you make out what your son is saying?

My son has done this for 7 years- docs were always flummmoxed and never had a really good term for it. Some said it was a form echolalia but since he was not autistic they always just kind of scratched their heads not knowing what to call it. He was not echoing what others said nor having stream of consciousness ideas of what he was thinking so it did not really "fit" echolalia in the classic terms.7 years and 3 Neurologist later....my latest Neuro has dubbed it a complex vocal tic AND I think he is right!! Miracles never cease. Get a smart one evey now and then.

My son has improved this behavior GREATLY on Prozac 20 mg daily since June 2011. It used to drive me absolutely CRAAAAZY. He is now about a 2/10 on a scale of 10/10 of where he has been in the past. Let me tell ya- silence is golden without hearing him muttering and talking to himself all the time when he was on computer or watching TV.

Prozac and Lamictal are the only Rx meds he takes.

My DS does this since his onset of PANDAS-- he does this especially in school where you may guess the teacher finds it quite disruptive. I have worked with him over the last several weeks practicing "hearing" it in his head without having the words actually come out of his mouth. I started with simple phrases and images and had him "see" them and "hear" them, visualizing in his mind. He has really taken to the concept and can use it in school if reminded. (He is 6 years old). He has difficulty controlling it, but he can modify it. We have a very understanding teacher, so that helps! At home we practice the same thing and he is getting better at controlling it.
