LaurenK Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 (edited) Today I went to the ped, we just had IV steroids for my son and the ped is just not on board at all. We want him to prescribe antibiotics and prescribe them aggressively when needed but he said my son is too complex. We know of another family who has a son with PANDAS that goes to him but he is fully supportive! We brought it to his attention and he said this: Which patient would you want? The one who’s been sick since birth, behind socially and educationally and has an abrupt onset of tics and ocd? Or a completely normal 9 year old with no developmental or social delays with an abrupt onset of tics and OCD? The first child would be my son. I'm enraged. Anyone else with a child with aspergers who sort of feels dumped or let down by their ped? I feel like because he also has asperger ty[e behavior that the doctor thinks he'll only ever recover to a point so why bother at all. Edited February 26, 2012 by LaurenK
peglem Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Ahhh, Lauren, I have many, many crappy doctor stories. I am surprised, though, that this doctor was so open about it. Really?!! What qualifies him to decide which children get relief from their misery? I'm sorry this happened. I hope he didn't say that in front of your son.
peglem Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 I know, I already replied, but I'm getting worked up over this! Which patient would you want? The one who’s been sick since birth, behind socially and educationally and has an abrupt onset of tics and ocd? Or a completely normal 9 year old with no developmental or social delays with an abrupt onset of tics and OCD? The first child would be my son. 1st of all, its not like he has to make a choice about which child to treat. Its not like he is limited in the number of abx scripts he can write. I just don't understand the logic at all- and I've had lots of experience with this attitude and the anger and frustration is only made worse by the fact that I just don't see any validity in what they say. What I hear is, "I'm giving up on your child because the degree of their illness is more than I want to deal with." Really, you're not asking for an organ transplant here (Although I'd be pretty livid if a child was denied that treatment because they aren't "normal"),just abx for a medical condition. When my daughter was 10, she had an eeg. This "top peds neuro" in the state reported back to me that her eeg was normal. When I got a copy of the eeg report, it most certainly was not normal- but this doc stated in his report that it was normal for "these kids."
