So this popped up in my email inbox today.

Neutrophils Decreased in OCD

So, has anyone had their PANDAS kids neutrophil count taken, and if so, what was the outcome/result? Also, as I'm fuzzy on the various immune cell types and testing, are neutrophils something that is typically taken into account in a standard immune panel?

Thanks!

This is interesting. I was just going over some of our DS15 blood work that he had done last fall when we got back from the clinic in St.Petes - Florida. Dr. M had us do some blood work and I think it was part of a standard immune panel. One of the things that he had tested as part of the work up was something called Absolute Neutrophils and his were low - 1088 with the range being 1800-8000. There is also another area labeled Neutrophils which was 34%. I was wondering what this was and why it was low.

Neutrophils are measured as part of a standard CBC panel, along with basophils and eosinophils. We run CBCs at least every 4 months, sometimes more often, including AST/ALT for liver function. FWIW, neither of my kids has ever had out of range on any of the "phils".

Interesting, although a very small study. DD's neutrophil count in 2009/2010 was consistently low. Have to look at more recent test results.
