Hello,

My 13 yo son will have his second IVIG on Mon and Tues with Dr. B. On his last treatment, his PANDAS sx went through the roof for a couple weeks before he began to improve. Luckily we had few direct physical side-effects from the IVIG (no headache or vomiting) but his OCD, hallucinations, and fear were at at all time high.

Has anyone had success with bentonite clay or activated charcoal. I bought some charcoal today, but there is no way my son will take that size pill.

Thanks for all you help,

Sharon

Hi Sharon --

I'm sure others who've done IVIG (we haven't) will chime in about ways to decrease some of the "bad" reactions; I see a lot of ibuprofen and benedryl, to name a couple.

About the charcoal and/or bentonite clay, we have used the clay in the past very successfully; we only use it occassionally now, but I'm really glad to have found it and keep it on hand. The nice thing about the clay is that you can get it in a liquid solution that can be mixed tastelessly into juice; it changes the texture a bit (a little chalky), but not the taste, and there's no issue with getting "big pill" down. It might be worth a try for you.

All the best with your next IVIG!

I have given activated charcoal to my kids in water, I just open the capsule and put in a canteen of water so they cannot see the black. They drink it no questions. It helps calm things down when they are having mild symptoms but not a big help if in a serious flare. Mostly I use it to clean up yeast die off. They have never had a bad experience with it, no side effects. That is my experience so far.

I do think activated charcoal helped a bit when DS was at his worst post-IVIG. I also believe that lots of water is key for him, and we alternate ibuprofen and tylenol so he can get meds a bit more quickly- The nurses can give you the schedule for that.
