Hi - I was just wondering if anyone uses this on their kids?

Here's a wikipedia link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cromoglicic_acid

DS4 has a lot of itching, especially at night, probably due to high histamine which we are trying to deal with via methylation support but are interested in a quick fix too. Our immunologist has suggested Allegra (H1).

As I've read that H1 antihistamines can be detrimental to BBB integrity, we and our ped are considering Cromolyn use. It is a mast cell stabiliser.

It seems to have a great safety profile but requires 4x daily dosing and thus was overtaken by easier to dose alternatives.

Any info gladly received :)

Have not tried this, but we are now true believers in Pepcid, which as I understand it is an H2, as opposed to H1, blocker. DS has been taking one per day (usually before dinner) for the last 45 days or so, and his eczema has disappeared! On top of which, his constant itching and scratching at certain spots during anxious moments (his wrist, his left forefinger) has waned dramatically, as well. Given as we haven't changed anything else, I can't help but give the Pepcid credit. :)

Hi - yes - we have used the oral form in the past with very good success. Prior to PANDAS treatments DS had many food sensitivities and was very reactive. Cromolyn really seemed to help reduce behavioral issues after certain foods. I believe we did it 3 times a day for a while - then just as needed. We started with DS actually swallowing the liquid in the little nebulizer pack, but they stopped making this and then we startes using gastrocrom. The problem with this was that it really needed to be dissolved in water and DS could not drink a whole cupful as he did not like the taste.

Thanks for the info

Momwith - did you see any benefit re PANDAS type behaviours with the H2?

thanks :)

Hard to tease out as always, but yes, I think so. Like I said, in addition to the eczema, he had this nervous habit of scratching away at his left forefinger and/or wrist when he was anxious over homework, especially, or thinking hard in general. I kept catching him do it, and the skin was getting increasingly irritated. He said it itched, but of course it did because he was abrading it so much, and it just got drier and drier in this weather, cracking, etc.

After about 2 weeks on the Pepcid though, along with the eczema receding, I could see the healing on the finger and wrist. When I asked DS about it, he said he wasn't scratching it as much . . . also said it didn't itch as much as it used to. Hard to know, frankly, whether the majority of the itch was on the skin or in his head to begin with. :P
