dut Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Hi - I was just wondering if anyone has seen magnesium activating their PANDAS child? Could it be a methylation thing? He is homozygous for the MTHFR C677T. I only seem to recall good things being written re mag. Thanks
LNN Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Magnesium has been a good thing for DS, but his MTHFR is normal. It has also helped DD - at least with BM regularity. But she has some sort of manic/bipolar thing going on that I need to figure out. I suspect it's a copper chelation happening from the zinc supplementation we're doing for KPU (blood test shows high copper). But I can't say for certain. I don't think it's the magnesium. Will have to give it time. I would think magnesium would be a good thing, but perhaps you're seeing a down-stream methylation block? Have you tried a methyl-folate or methyl-B12 or TMG/betaine supplementation? Why do you suspect magnesium?
dut Posted December 12, 2011 Author Report Posted December 12, 2011 Hi - ds is currently on the MethylGuard by Thorne so is getting the mthf, B6, B12 and TMG. He also gets additional B12. He got strep maybe 3 months back.. no strep symptoms but lots of aggression, defiance really just plain mean and horrid, hyper too and maybe some sign of a tic.. lots of spitting that coulda been tic/ocdish. Anyways abx knocked it out. Got ill again, this time no +ve swab and abx knocked it down but not out and we've been saw toothing along. We saw an increase and then did more abx and then on day 2 of this round of abx everything just went away again ...happy happy me but then added epsom salts to a bath which I don't do as a rule and had an awful day the day after. It sounds odd 'cos everyone seems to love mag but I have notiued this effect in him before.. from bad days following to not being able to go to sleep following mag in the bath. It seesm opposite to what others experience.... perhaps it is pushing stuff down stream... I'll try it again and see what happens... thanks....
LNN Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 Epsom salts are often used as a detox therapy. Is it possible there's a detox element going on, rather than something specifically about the magnesium? Have you done much research on the trans-sulfuration pathway for detox? Anything along that line that might strike a chord? It might be worth posing a question on the lyme forum. Suzan posted last week about vinegar/cider? baths that brought on a strong reaction followed by improvements. Folks over there have a variety of detox experiences that might be helpful. Just brainstorming.
hootie Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 What else is in the supplement you are using? He could be reacting to something besides the magnesium. Also, what form of magnesium is in the supplement you are giving?
dut Posted December 12, 2011 Author Report Posted December 12, 2011 Hi - he's getting the mag from the epsom salt baths only. I'm not giving him additional thru supps.. I'll go take a look at the methylguard supp and see if anything else could be the issue but I think not as he's been taking that for a while with no noticeable bad effects. It could just be the saw toothed nature of it all. I'm just sus of the mag 'cos of the timing.....
lynn Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 DS has no problem with oral supplements of Mg but has had surprising (and disappointing) results with Epsom salts baths. On other boards I read that this was detox, but DS never got to being better, it just made him crazy hyper. I thought epsom salts helped the sulfate pathway? Maybe the problem is that our children have some other block that interferes with that?
hootie Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 It could be that his sulfation pathway is blocked. I would try pure magnesium such as mag chloride (ancient minerals) or mag malate.
