ilovedogs Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 Hi guys, my ds has tics and OCD but is now battling a sinus infection and cough. The doc first put him on azithromycin(z-pac) and he got diarrhea within 2 hours of taking it. Really bad intestinal cramping and pain, too. So, we took him off antibiotics to see if his body would fight it off naturally and to see if maybe he improves today or tomorrow. Is there any other antibiotic out there that has a lesser effect on the intestinal tract yet still fight infections just as well? Just in case we need to put him back on them, I'd like it to be less traumatic for him. Thanks! B
MomWithOCDSon Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 I might suggest a time-released abx option, like Augmentin XR or "Zmax," the new time-released azith. In my DS's case, we found that the time-released form was considerably easier on his gut, presumably because the cellulose in which the med is suspended serves as a "buffer" and puts the med in the system without having it hit the gut all at once? I might also suggest you try adding a sach boulardii (like Florastor) probiotic. This particular strain of probiotic is supposed to have anti-diarrheal qualities, and we used it and didn't have any problems. Good luck!
