LNN Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 We just sent our KPU sample in yesterday and I wanted to pass along a few tips for anyone about to do the test. When we did the test last week, I put the urine sample into the bubble wrap pouch and Fed Ex bio bag provided by the lab. Dropped it off at Fed Ex and looked forward to putting DS back on vitamins and supplements, since he was struggling while being off of them the week prior to the test. The next morning, Fed ex returned my sample, saying the bubble wrap pouch needed to be in a sturdy cardboard box, per government guidelines. ??? I called the lab and they said they'd never had any problems with any other shipments. But for what it's worth, save yourself some grief and get a $1.25 cardboard mailer that fits into the FedEx bio bag that comes with the test kit. It s*cked to have to stop vitamins/supplements again to re-do the test. Also, if you want to do the collection over a weekend, per the lab, you can freeze the sample for up to 4 days. The name of the lab has changed from Vitamin Diagnostics to Health Diagnostics and Research Institute and payment for the test should be made out to the new name. The test is either $70 if you use their fedEx account number and have FedEx charge them, or $55 if you pay for the FedEx shipment yourself. In hindsight, it would have saved me $4 to pay for it myself. So just FYI. Now we wait for results, which apparently take 3-4 weeks. But didn't want someone else to wake up on the morning after to find a bottle of pee on their door step
Suzan Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 I am just going to the fedx or ups place today to mail our samples. Good info here about vitamin diagnostics. I could not find a way to get their test so I ended up going to DirectHealthCare Labs. I hope the test is OK coming from them too. They were $55 and do not pay shipping. I did add vitamins back as soon as finishing the collection so maybe I should back off for another day just in case! Ours came in a styrofoam box that was inside a cardboard box so hopefully that works. I have three tests in two of these little boxes. I am interested in your sons reaction to not being on vitamins. dd9 and I both had a hard time being off vitamins. I noticed a difference in dd9 after about 3 days and she's been a mess ever since (increased OCD, fears, anxiety and anger). dd8, who I suspect more of KPU, seemed to do better off her vitamins. She's the same one who reacts to omega 3 oils too. I'm trying to figure out if one reaction might be more indicative of KPU than the other or if it's just an individual thing. It will be interesting to get the test results back. I think ours will take 2 weeks. Susan
LNN Posted July 6, 2011 Author Report Posted July 6, 2011 Like your DD9, DS8 hasn't yet recovered from being off everything. He's been back on schedule since Sunday, but still not himself. We stopped everything except abx and probiotics, for what turned out to be two weeks. Stopped glutathione, vitamins, milk thistle, charcoal and no motrin. One night, after about 5 days, DS was near tears, begging to go back on everything because he felt awful. His OCD mildly returned, muscle pain, feeling "off", foggy, hard to find words, sort of dazed and subdued, but then would have bursts of uncontrolled, age-regressive silliness (which goes away within 20 min of motrin). So the "good" news is that something we're spending $$$ on is helping. Since resuming things, the silliness has subsided, the OCD seems to be lessening. But the muscle pain and fog is still bad. I'm trying not to jump to conclusions about what any of it means. I just know it's significant, but not sure in what way yet.
sf_mom Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 (edited) One reason we stuck with heavy detox for older DS was because every time we backed off or increased we saw a change in symptoms almost immediately. Something about it was working... No major herx from KPU treatment 'yet' with only improvements in his chapped lips, dark circles and mood. We also stopped Biaxin and added Azithro during same period. The herx for KPU is typically between 2 to 6 weeks so we are still anticipating to see something. We are supplementing with 1 'Core' per day for younger DS. We also started a new anti-viral protocol when we started the Core. He is definitely worse since these changes... BUT, he did have one great day over the holiday so I am hopeful. We also started younger DD with 1 'Core' per day, new anti-viral protocol and digestive enzymes. No worsening of symptoms and only improvement with slight dark circles under her eyes. Our younger DS is definitely struggling the most right now and seems to be more responsive to any changes. His CAM Kinase was lower than his twin sister's but all her anti-neuronal antibodies were within normal ranges while his was top end of normal for one area. I am always trying to figure out why one twin seems worse than the other and maybe its just because one is male and one is female. Most of their lab work is identical with only subtle differences. -Wendy Edited July 6, 2011 by SF Mom

I suspect that I may be dealing with Lyme disease and KPU/HPU. While doing some Google searches I came across an article where Dr. Klinghard is quoted in saying that Vitamin Diagnostics has the best test. In searching for this lab I came across this thread. Is the lab you mention above this one: http://www.genomeweb.com/blog/health-diagnostic-laboratory-now-offering-cyp2c19-testing I am thinking about ordering this test to see if this is part of my issue. Thank you, Kania

Thank you, Kania This is the lab: http://www.europeanlaboratory.nl/ They used to be Vitamin Diagnostics - the one Dr K recommends. But they recently changed their name. My son ended up positive for KPU and we will start treatment next week after running a few questions past our LLMD.

Thank you and I hope the treatment will help him. Another question - what about HPU? I thought it had to be tested as well? Also, did our doctor order it or did you order it yourself? Thanks!!
