ShaesMom Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 I took Bactrim for about three days last week-took a day off- and then have been on it again for the last two days. Today I was sitting outside and noticed that I was starting to get what looked like a heat rash on my legs. No itching. After taking a shower I noticed it was on my arms too. I'm not covered but it is definitely there. Now about two hours after coming in the rash is much fainter. I know Bactrim & rashes go hand in hand but I've been on it before and never had a problem. No known sulfa allergy. So-here's the thing, no rashes from it before, my period just ended, and I've been drinking lemon water the last couple of days to help detox. LLMD did not RX Bactrim-it was left over from a prior infection. Ceftin wasn't doing anything so I decided to finish up the Bactrim because I knew it made the leg, back, & hip pain go away. Last week, while only on Ceftin, I had a faint bullseye rash appear on my tummy. I really don't want to stop the Bactrim because I feel human again. In fact, I want to ask the new LLMD for Bactrim. Can someone knock some sense into my thick skull please....
LNN Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Bactrim causes photosensitivity. Probably a reaction to being out in the sun. not sure what you do once it happens - but it sounds more like a sun issue rather than an allergic reaction. It's possible it's a herx rash. Take photos and then maybe call your LLMD.

If not itching, not spreading etc. It is probably a sun sensitivity rash from being out in the sun on Bactrim.Bactrim is a sun sensitive medication. BIG no, no to lie out in the sun while taking it or else...get a little heat rash as you describe:) You can continue to feel human- you just have to remain flounder belly white (no tan) and stay out of the sun if you are going to take it! Heat from sun followed by hot water from shower likely brought out the rash. It should fade if you stay out of the sun and take tad cooler showers. HTH!
justinekno Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 (edited) My son had a rash on his cheeks and arms while taking bactrim. Our LLMD saw it and said it looked more like die off - we were having some constipation issues so the dr felt the toxins were the issue. Once we got the constipation taken care of, the rash subsided. As the treatment has progressed, the rash has gone away. Perhaps the difference with my son's rash was that it never faded throughout the day and going outside didn't change it either.
