peglem Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 I wonder if the vaccine can cause PANDAS flares? I hope they will test for that and make sure that the vaccine itself does not cause the autoimmune reactions that GABHS can cause.
thereishope Posted May 13, 2011 Report Posted May 13, 2011 (edited) I think we knew this would come some day. I found this about it too http://www.ahc.umn.edu/research/corridors/infectiousdisease/strep-vaccine/index.htm Edited May 13, 2011 by Vickie
airial95 Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 My pediatrician mentioned this to me a couple of months ago. Personally, it terrifies me to think that I would potentially inject my son with something that would cause him to flare up. But on the other hand...would you you be willing to deal with another flare up (even if it was of epic proportions) if there was a strong probability that it would be the LAST flare up ever? It's an interesting question...

thereishope Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Interesting question. My answer.... No. Because on the flip side, do you want to gamble that if you have a flare up, you won't be able to get it under control and it remains. I can't look at my child and say, 'Okay, let's try this. It may throw you into complete insanity. You will live in fear, have enormous anxiety, and perhaps want to end your life, but it might, just might, be only one last time". But on the other hand...would you you be willing to deal with another flare up (even if it was of epic proportions) if there was a strong probability that it would be the LAST flare up ever?
dcmom Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 I would not do it either. I think it is GREAT- lets let everyone else do it- so there will be less strep. But, like Vickie says, each exacerbation is SCARY, I could not knowingly send them into one. Also, vaccines fail- with our luck- our kids could still be vulnerable. And lastly, my kids have "reacted" to non strep triggers, so the end of strep, does not mean the end of pandas, for us.
JAG10 Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 EXACTLY, DCmom!!!!!! Let all the health kids get it to provide our kids with "herd immunity" It probably wouldn't work on our kids anyway.
