sf_mom Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 I am wondering if anyone else's children have an intolerance for watching TV. My younger 3 year old son can not handle TV at all. I don't know if the shows make him fearful 'Kipper, Bernsten Bear's', etc, the screen or his sensory issues around the noise. He literally paces from living room to family room and will only glimpse at the TV. My older son had a similar issue at one point and he claimed it was the light 'flashing' or 'movement' on the screen. Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if your child was able to vocalize the issue. -Wendy

Then when he turned 4, he watched 101 Dalmations about 1001 times. Could be a boy thing? Very very VERY focused on legos at those ages though...
sf_mom Posted May 12, 2011 Author Report Posted May 12, 2011 Here too, 'obsessed' with Lego's which might not be a good thing either.
ShaesMom Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Us too-My dd is obsessed with Legos. Plays with the people the way most girls play with Barbies or dolls.

momcap Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 I have had times when the TV overwhelmed me. I couldn't even be in the same room, mostly because of the noise, but also because sometimes the pictures flashed by too fast, and I felt like it was in my face. It almost felt like an attack, and gave me a panicky fight-or-flight type feeling. Those were mostly days when I felt a deep agitation, with or without the TV. The TV just made it 100x worse. The movie theatre was impossible, even on a "good" day back then. The TV also bothered me on days when I had a brain fog, but that was a totally different feeling and not nearly as bad. I felt like my brain was 2 steps behind what my eyes were seeing and my ears were hearing. Usually on those days I could just tune it out, which I was not able to do on agitated days. I never knew I had lyme back then. But all the pieces are fitting together and making sense now that I know. My kids don't seem to be bothered by the TV at all. In fact, for my DS7 who is the most severely affected (PANDAS, Lyme?, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, sensory processing disorder) the TV has kept me sane. Well sort of . He is completely sucked into "TV land" the second it's turned on, and it can even pull him out of a mini-rage - not the full-out ones, but the little ones that are more like tantrums but could turn into a huge rage without an immediate distraction. When his sensory stuff is really bad he tries to listen to the TV on full blast - presumably to drown out background noise. IDK. p.s. Got our passports yesterday, so we can finally get to an LLMD!!!! ~happy dance~ I can hardly wait for Monday morning to make an appointment.
Bill Posted May 14, 2011 Report Posted May 14, 2011 My son has issues with the TV - he can't stand for it to be off! bill
