Hi there,

My dd7 (pitand/pandas) has had a lot of congestion for the past 5 days or so. A little sore throat at the beginning, but that's it. She dresses herself (well, ummm, that's another story), but I don't usually get a close look at her "booty." So tonight I happened to be helping her put her pull-up on because we just painted her nails, and she happened to bend forward, and I could see red. So I took a closer look, and there's a red ring -- sort of right where the cheeks would touch in the crack. It's not solid red to the anus (sorry to be so graphic), but more like it's NOT red near the anus, but when you move farther out, then the red ring. I would never normally give this a second thought, throw some A&D on if I could find any laying around, and move on.

Any thoughts? Been googling, but can only find "baby diaper rash" stuff.....

Thanks!

google perianl strep, and click on images button above the google logo. But don't rely on that - get into the pediatrican and get it swabbed - just like you would if she had a swore throat.

I believe they prescribe topical antibiotics for it, perhaps in conjunction with oral.

Please post back - I'd be interested in knowing. I am fairly sure that a weird rash my DS had was perianal strep that started this whole thing two years ago. At the time I lived in blissful ignorance and threw some over the counter ointment on it that we happen to have int he drawer (antibiotic ointment) and it went away. But, I didn't check it every day, and DS, being a 10 year old boy wasn't too keen on me checking it out. We never went to the doctor for it. Big mistake.

Could it possibly be from sleeping in a wet pull-up? When my youngest dd used them at night, she wet them big time while she slept, and got a rash on the bum sort of like that...

With my PANDAS dd, the first time we started daily treatment dose Azith., on the 2nd or 3rd week, she had the red sandpaper rash on her bum, pressed it and it would turn white, go back to red.

I googled Scarlantina rash, it looked exactly like that- although some pics of the Scalatina rash were vivid red.

I swore it was strep rash, the strep coming out, she normally never rashes, flawless skin.

Don't know if this helps.

The red ring right around the anus is classic yeast.

I'm intested in this too-as my 4 yr old, who we are questioning PANDAS, does have this. Exactly what you say-like a red ring that circles the anus but with the white space in between. The same thing happens in her vaginal area. Been unable to confirm strep on this kid, she's had this ring off and on for a while. I put Desitin on it every other day or so, and it lightens but never goes away. She wears a diaper at night as well. She gets the same rash that S&S described on her bum or just above, and it itches her. My PANDAS 6 y/o always got Scarletina rash, but hers was always classic-on the chest/torso and not itchy. I will be doing soe internet research on the perianal strep too.

i'd check out if this could be a yeast rash also. i don't know how to tell the difference btwn perianal strep and yeast -- i'm think a dr can tell the difference on sight or maybe they need to culture. but, yeast can present in that way also. with ds's first abx, he was on kelfex and nystatin and dr would check his bum. at that time, it was fine. later, he did have times of red rash. he was on treatments for strep and yeast so i don't know which it was but i believe it was one of them.

Well, today was CRAZY and totally forgot about her bum in lieu of other "happenings"....BUT, bedtime tonight, the bulb went off and I looked again, not great lighting, but I swear it was GONE! I have NO idea. But I will ask next time I'm at ped.....thanks for the feedback :)

My daughter will come and go just the same---was there tonight though! Wonder if that is more typical of yeast?
