VickyLH Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) A parent on the OCDParenting yahoo group is investigating the possibility of PANDAS in her 10 yo dd. Does anyone know of a PANDAS friendly doctor in southern Ontario? She lives in Hamilton. I seemed to recall some Canadian parents saying they had a difficult time finding someone who believed in PANDAS. Thanks, Vicky Edited February 17, 2011 by VickyLH
momcap Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Oh boy, not so much luck getting PANDAS help in Ontario (or Canada for that matter). I'm in Southwestern Ontario. Our pediatrician believes that PANDAS does in fact exist. Our case manager at the children's mental health centre mentioned to me that he is the ONLY pedi in this area who will even acknowledge it. That said, we argued for months about what exactly PANDAS is and how to treat it. He has helped by prescribing antibiotics that were recommended by a U.S. PANDAS doc following a phone consult. He has some strange ideas about behavioural issues and parenting strategies. He can also come across as "talking down" and he makes a lot of people angry. I love him and hate him. If she wants his name and number she can PM me.

Makes me glad we moved to the U.S. 13 years ago before we had kids (we grew up in Hamilton as well). I think she had an appointment with her Pediatrician today, so depending on how that went, I'll let her know she can contact you. Thanks, Vicky
allie01 Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Hi there, I am in Southern Ontario as well. We have a great pediatrician who diagnosed our son, but doesn't seem to know how treat him on a regular basis other than monitoring him for symptoms and putting him on antibiotics when flareups occur. Is this all we can expect in terms of treatment? He is referring us to a behavioural therapist, and we have an appointment with a pediatric neurologist in a few months. This is great...we are happy to see as many specialists as we can. However,as it is not a widely accepted diagnosis in Canada, I feel like we are in over our heads. My concern is the dealing with the upcoming school year and the exposure to strep and the potential flare ups of symptoms again and basically managing this illness rather than it managing us! Do you think it would be worthwhile seeing your pediatrician? It would be nice to see someone who actually is familiar with PANDAS and can help us in the preventative aspect of treatment...any thoughts or suggestions or information would be helpful. airial95 Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 I know it's not Canada, but it's a hop-skip-and a bridge away from Hamilton, I think there are a couple of PANDAS friendly docs in the Buffalo area. I seem to remember someone PM'ing me a few names last year when we were going up there to visit the in-laws. I'll see if I can find the PM and pass it along if anyone's interested.
