I second Peggy's comments - I absolutely do run in for a swab at any sign of strep; hope they are feeling better soon!

Just so you don't worry too much, impetigo gets a crusty top coat after a few days. My daughter's skin is very sensitive to "wet" so she gets a mild rash around her nose pretty quickly if she is very congested. That may be what you are are seeing.

But yet, I would swab for any sore throat!

In your specific case, because your PANDAS son is reacting to something, I think it's worth taking the non-PANDAS child in to rule out strep.

Me and my kids... I have 3 kids, bad insurance (over $100 to go in for a strep test). So, it depends on what the other symptoms are for me to take them for a strep test. Side note: my kids have been asymptomatic when they have strep. If the kids has just a sore throat, I'll monitor it. My kids get sore throats for nasal drainage due to allergies, sleeping with their mouth open, etc. If they have a fever, white spots, or a few days of it, yes I take them. If I see any other red flags of even remotely having strep, I take them. If the school calls and says strep is the room, I take them. If one has strep, we ALL get tested. So, no, I don't take for every sore throat. fyi...they do sell rapid tests online you can buy and have on hand as well.

FYI: Headache, sore throat & nausea can all be symptoms of strep throat... fever may or may not be present. My DD11 does not run a fever with strep, but does with ear infections; however, I've seen many a child in the clinic who presents with fever and has strep.

I hope they are all feeling better soon and you are able to get some rest.

Go ahead and laugh at me, but I take them in for a swab whenever my son starts biting people. It's a behavior that is sigular to when he's exposed to strep. so yes - i take them in at any provocation. Our pediatrician's office is really open to PANDAS, and seeing as I've been right 80% of the time - they never question my asking for the test (one or the other child has some form of strep, or within 24 hours of a negative result the school notifies us that someone in the classroom has strep.)

It's always better to be safe, and try your best to stay ahead of the tsunami (I'd say "stay ahead of the storm" - but storms are easy to handle compared to PANDAS!)

Oh, I totally agree! For us, if a meltdown occurs, we run for a strep test. A tell tale meltdown is our indicator.
