nola Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Hello everyone, I'm somewhat new to this forum. I've been doing most of my posts in the Tourettes/Tics forums. This evening, I decided to explore this topic. My son started his tics at 3. It began with excessive blinking and shoulder shrugs. It was never that bad. In August 2010, his tics exploded. He has had neck rolls, eye blinking, and throat clearing. Currently, he is doing a very loud and intense breathing in and out and humming sound. He does it so much that he says he has trouble breathing. I am so scared for him. Out of despair, I began reading through this forum. Could this be caused by lyme? We live in Oakland, Ca. We don't hike much or live near woods. I'm willing to get him tested. Poor guy is going through so much. Can anyone tell me where I can go to have him tested? I would appreciate any help. I'm feeling so helpless and I don't know where to start. Thank you, Nola
KeithandElizabeth Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) Hi Nola: SF Mom lives near you and she has found two really good LLMD's in the Bay area who can help you test for lyme, mycoplasma and coinfections. I am sure she will PM tomorrow morning with their information. Many of us have come from other boards because we have found that our children's Tics and/or OCD were caused by bacterial and viral infections. Both of my children have had issues with Tics and OCD and these issues are resolving with the proper antibiotic combinations. My children did have lyme disease and one child is still fighting the lyme coinfection called Babesia. By the way, we live in Colorado (lowest incidences of lyme on the map) and although we have traveled to lyme areas on vacations, we have never once found a tick on our children. I do encourage you to rule out these infections with a good LLMD who understands the nuances of these different bacterias and viruses. Elizabeth Edited January 18, 2011 by KeithandElizabeth

nola Posted January 18, 2011 Author Report Posted January 18, 2011 Thanks, Elizabeth! I look forward to hearing from the other mom. I really don't know much about lyme disease. I've never noticed a rash on my son. He does have odd fevers here and there. In fact, he had a fever of 103 on Saturday. By Sunday, his fever was gone but his tics skyrocketed! Is there another way to get lyme disease without a tick bite? Do you mind telling me what kinds of treatments you did for your child? Is it treated with antibiotics? I've heard so many things about antibiotics. I've been told (from our homeopath) that antibiotics mask the disease (like strep) and makes it hide deeper in the tissue making it worse later on. I don't know what to believe. How long before you saw improvements? Thanks so much!
KeithandElizabeth Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Hi Nola: Yes, we did treat the lyme disease with a combination of antibiotics along with herbs and homepathic detox formulas. It took my daughter 10 months to treat the lyme, mycoplasma, strep and babesia. My son is still working on the babesia and he has been on lyme treatment for 11 months. Depending on the child's immune system as well as how many infections the child has in his/her body, the treatment time can really vary. My daughter is no longer on any antibiotics and she is now on high dose probiotics (400 to 500 billion units daily) to heal the gut as well as a few other natural supplements to help with brain healing and detoxing. She is about 96% better in terms of Tics, OCD, mood lability, etc...... Our doctor feels that she will get to 100% over the next 6 months as her body rids itself of the remaining toxins and heals from possible nerve damage. Elizabeth
nola Posted January 18, 2011 Author Report Posted January 18, 2011 Elizabeth, was this all through your LLMD? As of now, I have no one but our wonderful pediatrician. Unfortunately, she is not an expert of tic disorders and is highly suspicious of other natural or homeopathic remedies.
KeithandElizabeth Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 Our LLMD is very alternative and believes that the combination of antibiotics, herbs and detox formulas are the quickest way to get rid of lyme. We also see a nutritionist who helps us with the high dose probiotics. I think you will really like SF Mom's doctor as well because he also incorporates quite a bit of alternative medicine. I will PM you his name and I am sure SF Mom will add more about his testing and treating practices later. Elizabeth
cobbiemommy Posted January 18, 2011 Report Posted January 18, 2011 DS, 11, never had a visible rash from a tick bite. We had seen a tick (unengorged) crawling on him when he was three, but never made the connection. DS, tested positive for Lyme (Borrelia), Bartonella, RMSF, and Babesia. Websites that say you must have a rash, or seen an engorged tick or that the tick has to be on you for 24 hours are just wrong!!!!! Now that we are getting treatment, things are improving, but some days are still challenging. Get thee to a good LLMD, usually they are very good with all types of chronic infections.
