Brother has Flu A

The 5 of us are flying to CT to see Dr. B in 9 days. However, the 8 year old (not the one that I write about with a PANDAS diagnosis), has the Flu. This will be our first time dealing with an illness since the bomb of PANDAS hit us last year. Our pediatrician is calling in Tamiflu for the 9 year old and the PANDAS 11 year old. I am not seeing any "flare ups" yet. Has anyone seen Tamiflu cause problems with PANDAS kids? What is in that stuff?

My Pandas son developed what looked like tardive dyskenesia within a day of starting Tamiflu. We discontinued after 1 dose and symptoms resolved within a day. We're the only ones I know of who've had an adverse reaction. So I don't want to add to your already frazzled nerves. For us, symptoms did resolve quickly upon discontinuing (DS has also had adverse reactions with Zicam). I believe others have used it with positive results. So you can always start it and just watch closely. (bear in mind we may have had lyme in the mix when this happened - that may have been a factor - don't know).

We had positive results with tamiflu. Pandas dd took it within first 12 hours of contracting flu from sister. It stopped the flu within another 12 hrs. She proceeded to go into pandas episode quickly and dramatically, which we treated with steroid within 36 hours. Episode was halted.

 

Tamiflu and steroids worked dramatically to save our dd from a major episode.

I've used Tamiflu for my PANDAS daughter. It was wonderful for stopping the flu, and we didn't see any increase in PANDAS symptoms. Although, I should add that we have not seen her have an increase of PANDAS when we have viral issues -- at least not enough to consider increasing antibiotics or trying prednisone.

I should add- the flu we had was H1N1.
