We are just starting this journey, well sorta. My question is, when this last episode with my dd flared she had contracted EBV and her Strep titers are low so I'm wondering if the EBV can make PANDAS flare?

Thanks

Yes, anything that provokes an immune response can cause a flare.

I would say yes because both of our sons first showed PANDAS symptoms after EBV. I agree - anything that provokes an immune response will cause an increase in symptoms.

I agree with everyone else. Anything that activates the immune system, can make PANDAS symptoms worse. Also, from what I've read EBV can cause false positive Lyme tests. So, if you were thinking about doing that any time soon, you may want to do additional research.

After 6 months of a strep infection that my then 4 y/o daughter could not get rid of, she contracted EBV. Her tics began at this time. Prior to that a few compulsive behaviors and emotional lability, but it seems it was the EBV that brought out the tics, which is her primary symptom these days. THe good news is she's 6 is well managed on antibiotics. Good Luck!

Yes we were going to test for Lyme since she's 9 yo and has been bitten by probably 50 ticks. I will rethink this now.

Thanks

EBV caused a six month mild exacerbation in my older son.(back when this all started) It takes a while for the initial infection to clear, but, the antibodies stay with you forever. Almost everyone will be infected with EBV. So, yes,EBV definitely can cause an exacerbation in PANDAS. Also, like Vickie said...EBV is one virus implicated in causing false positive Lyme tests. And remember, almost everyone will be affected with EBV. Many, if not infected, have shown positive for the virus after IVIG because of the high prevalance of antibodies to EBV in the general population. Please be careful in interpreting your Lyme results...especailly if you are IGM positive only...the prevalance of a false positive is high in this group if you have had symptoms for more than 3 months.

Since your daughter has been bitten so often I highly recommend your daughter be properly evaluated for LD/co-infection by an LLMD. They can assist in properly ruling in or/out LD as factor for your daughter's potential PANDAS and the role EBV might play in her condition.

I have three children with congenital Lyme and we were able to rule in LD via DNA testing. This is not antibody testing and does not cross react with any virus or other bacteria.

Here is a link on how to find a good LLMD for your area: http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10543
