smartyjones
the other day, we were at the book store. my kids found a spot to look over their picks near the health section. i looked up and saw a book, Women and Autoimmune Disease, published 2004, Robert Lahita, MD, PhD, professor at Mount Sinai Medical School. as i flipped through, i was astonished to see chapter 7, "PANDAS, the Jekyll and Hyde Syndrome" -- an 8 page chapter. i don't think it's any new info for anyone here, some may find points of disagreement. . . but i thought a really good basic overview - with case study and simple explanation - to add to my list of articles to share with others when trying to explain. i think sometimes, we know so much and have been through so much, it's helpful to have references that can just lay out the simple facts, without being overwhelming to the reader. (school, family, etc).
MomWithOCDSon
Thanks! Some people are more influenced the more sources you can provide, so having another source is ALWAYS welcome!
SarahJane
I checked that same book out from the library last week...didn't think to share it here. Sorry. I agree that it gives a good description. There are a few things that made me go "huh?" tho'...just like you. I checked one of my PANDAS docs lists & he's not on there. It says that current estimations show that less than 1% of children who get strep throat could get PANDAS, but he also acknowledges that he "[does not] believe we have yet made the scientific connection to many of its psychological manifestations, which would send this number higher." With an estimated 4million babies born each year in this country (rough estimate from a few Google searches) then if even .005% (half a percent) could get it, that's 20,000 kids just in the US. Seems like a lot to me and I've never seen a figure like that before. What constitutes a "rare disorder"? He also mentions that the child must have precisely the right immune response genes on chromasome 6. (I'd never seen that either.) I would love to be in a room full of people who understand PANDAS and the doctors and researchers and talk about all this stuff. That would be awesome. Imagine all our conspiracies converging. I would think the key to unlocking it would be in there somewhere. Edited October 23, 2010 by SarahJane
kimballot
THanks SO much for sharing! It generally takes a couple of years for articles to make it to book chapters, and you said this one was published in 2004, so I am sure we have lots more info since then. However, this could be a GREAT thing to share with schools. I've not seen it yet. Does it look like something a teacher or therapist might read and get a decent background on PANDAS? And.... does it say that the trigger does not have to be strep throat?? I'll try to get a copy from the library before I buy one. Thanks for sharing! kimballot
Ok... I just went into Amazon to look at the book. I liked the first few pages that they let you read because it looks like the author actually explains t cells and B cells and antibodies in a reasonable manner .... which I still have a hard time understanding. They had used versions of the book starting at $.58, with $3.99 shipping, so I figured it was worth the $5 investment and I just ordered one. Here's the link if anyone wants to look at it. http://www.amazon.com/Women-Autoimmune-Disease-Mysterious-Betrays/dp/006008149X/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_cart_1

T_Mom
Great find! I just "searched" on the Amazon link and searched starting with the chapter on Pandas of the text. There is a good section of the chapter there for free. Just reading those few pages from this book makes me think it could be very helpful for us all to use with schools, etc. I am curious about one thing I read so far...On p. 93 the author states, "...immune response genes on chromosone 6..." Can we test for these for our kids? He makes the case, it seems to me, that Pandas shows up only in kids whose genetic makeup is such that they are vulnerable...(we all know that by now!) Sure wish I had this chapter two years ago though! I just ordered a copy. Edited October 24, 2010 by T.Mom
kimballot
T-Mom - Thanks - I did not know you could search like that!!~ I also noticed on the Right side that you can download the kindle version for $10.99.... I think you can download those right to your computer if you don't have a kindle. Too bad I did not see that before I ordered it ... I could have been reading it already!
