Update on my friend and her son

ust a quick update on my friend and friend's son.

 

My friend's son was part of the original cluster of children who got sick in 2007. At the time of our playdate my friend's son had 8 of 9 markers for RF and was positive for strep. He was later diagnosed with PANDAS in November 2009 by Dr. K and treated with 3 hdIVIG in November 2009, Feb 2010, May 2010. Prior to his last hdIVIG treatment he was tested for LD and co-infections because he was struggling post treatment. He came back positive for Bartonella, Ehrlichiosis and inconclusive for LD. He is successfully being treated by a well respected LLMD in SF (we do not share the same Dr.) and anticipate the Lyme to be drawn out by further testing and treatment.

 

Most recently, my friend was also tested for LD/co-infections due to her own unresolved physical symptoms. She is positive for Bartonella, her CD 57 are in the 30's and her C3Ds are elevated with inclusive results for LD. She grew up on a dairy farm in WI with 20 farrow cats at any given time.

 

Again, her recent diagnoses is pointing towards a potential of Congenital Lyme Disease. Both her and her son are positive for Bartonella which has been proven to be passed congenitally.

 

When you know better, you do better. I reiterate the importance of looking at the entire families health history and throughly investigating possible co-infections for clues to unravel why your childs immune system has failed resulting in a hyper immune response i.e. PANDAS/PITANDS

Great post, Wendy! While my son only had one HD IVIg, our story is similar. Right after the IVIg, he got a rash on his torso and also a rash that looked like stretch marks popped up. He has Lyme, Bartonella, and we are not sure what else. We are waiting for test results. Here is the kicker to our little drama. The doc looked at DS face and said he has strep somewhere in his body. Evidently, he had pink cheeks and a pallor around his mouth area. She did a nasal swab in each side of his nose (not fun) and we are waiting for the results. He started Bicillin shots at the adult dose on Friday. Here we had been to "the best" doctors, some of them highly respected on this forum, and this independent doc in Kansas City found one of the pieces of our puzzle, right off! My son has improved greatly just since Friday. There is so much more to tell, but it will wait for another post.

Thanks for the update. It's good that they know about the bartonella. I remember reading something by one of the more prominent lyme researchers that he feels it's more common than borrelia. Could be because there are more confirmed modes of transmission (animal scratches, bites, fleas, head lice in addition to ticks). Hope they continue to find progress in their journey.
