Glutathione

Hi,

A number of us had our kids show deficient in glutathione antioxidant. I just posted our new test results in the TV/computer thread, and wanted to post this on glutathione.

I wouldn't supplement for this (e.g. glutathione and cysteine) without the Great Plains or some other test indicating a deficiency, and guided by a doctor.

But I think this is common with tic syndromes.

Hi Claire,

Great news with your son!

I just came back from my naturopath's office with a truck load of amino acids. My son has done an organix urine analysis from Metametrix.

It looks like yeast is not a problem for him and his bacteria levels are good, however, it looks like he is not breaking down his proteins very well and is not de-toxifying very well.

So far we have had good results with the supplements and elimination diet. I am now in the process of re-introducing all the foods back :( So far so good. I am just so excited to bring back a varied diet of fruits and vegetables! Also I have noticed that my son is able to watch TV like anyone else in the family and have no change in behavior or tics. His tics are still here but mild and occassional - enough that the average person would not really notice.

As per the test, here is what my naturopath has recommended:

Glycine

Arginine

N.A.C (N-Acetyl-L-Cystene)

SON Formula (contains a host of amino acids)

Glutathione

What is everyone's experience with amino acids?

We will do a hair analysis test for metals soon. I am very curious about mercury.

Thanks,

Evangelia

Evangelia,

Sorry I didn't respond, I remember reading this right as my son was really sick.

I just ordered some amino acids. Caz posted on these if you find her old posts. Pfeiffer said for us to just supplement--they didn't see the need to test, how interesting. (we always test first).

To all, here is an EXCELLENT article on low glutathione levels common in kids with autism, so they don't detox well. I believe this commonly applies to tic syndromes also.

Thanks to the friend that sent this to me!

Claire,

Thank you for the information on Glutathione. The articles were very interesting reading! I think there is definitately a correlation between our kids issues and the autism issues. We just got the results of my son's Spectracell test back. The test showed he was deficient in pantothenate (B5), glutamine and glutathione <_< . He still tested low in these even though he has been on Bonnie's vitamins, digestive enzymes and probiotics for about 3 months. His doctor put him on Reduced L-Glutathione Lotion (1 gram = 180 mg) from Kirkman Labs. Have you read any feedback from anyone who has used the lotion? We have only been using it for 3 days, so I haven't noticed any changes yet. We are supposed to use it twice a day, but I always start a half dose for about a week to ensure no negative side effects before I go to full dose.

Hi Layne,

Well, our kids certainly often have similar underlying issues as ASD, just different conditions.

Sorry to hear re the glutathione levels being low--but at least you have something to go on, yes? My son was also low in pantothenic acid.

We had bad luck raising glutathione levels with just oral supplementation, and even with the precursors alpha lipoic acid and cysteine (apparently ala feeds yeast also).

So I just ordered the glutathione lotion from Kirkman also--what a coincidence. It hasn't arrived, but lets keep eachother posted! I think it was Jennifer who suggested putting it on the feet. I don't have any direct feedback yet.

What was encouraging to me was that the article said that the levels could be positively impacted.

Claire,

I had read that oral supplementation with glutathione was ineffective. An article I read stated "Oral glutathione supplements, are virtually ineffective, since glutathione is a protein and is digested in the stomach before reaching the blood stream or tissues of the body." Our doctor said to apply the lotion in a different area of his body each night. She said that in a few cases it has caused a rash in the area where applied. We have not experienced that, thankfully. I have applied it on his arms and thighs with no problems. I applied it to his back one night and he said it burned (slightly) for a while. We won't do that again. Since starting the glutathione, he has been having a harder time concentrating in school. I am wondering if that is a sign that the glutathione is working and that his body is starting to purge some toxins. We also started him on the glutamine at the same time, so two factors could be involved. I'll let you know how it goes in a few weeks.
