Ok, got the link to work now. So it says that psoriasis is actually an autoimmune response to strep, and tonsillectomy brings remission, right?

I guess that tells me now I know where the "autoimmune" thing comes from (not MY side of the family! like it matters anyway!)

My husband did get strep a lot as a kid and his tonsils were removed. But, he still has psoriasis! I guess I need to start charting and see if I find a relationship between "flares" of ds and dh! And I'll make sure to get dh to check titers... I'm so sick of doctors!

It also implies that flairs of psoriasis are the result of strep exposures. When your kids all had strep was his psoriasis bad?

That's the million dollar question, isn't it? I wish I had an answer, but just now I am connecting these dots (thanks for posting it). I do remember not too long ago his face looked terrible, red and puffy and all his wrinkles were very noticeable, but I can't tell exactly that was, as I'm busy enough taking care of the kids' ailments... but I'll be watching for that in the future!

I am going to be hopeful and think maybe after we do plasmapheresis and no longer have the "canary effect" with ds, I will be able to tell just by looking at my dh's face if we have strep brewing! Wouldn't that be cool?

Who is doing the plasmapheresis for your son? Perhaps bring this article with you to discuss your DH's situation.... Antibiotics might be in order for him to protect your son? Definitely do titers on DH!!!! It will help with your Dr. to provide some perspective on the 'FAMILY' situation.

I am OVERLY convinced the entire family needs to be checked and you have to look at the wellness for the family. I know its hard with so many children but... I've got everyone on the same regime. My DH was always getting sick with the children. He has high titers, I do not, etc. etc.

We are doing it at Georgetown, through Dr. Latimer. She already ok'd it, and we would have done it in May except I wanted more time to figure out the family thing... Dr. Latimer agreed it was best to wait. It is just amazing every day I learn something new in this forum, and there seems to be no end to the things that need to be looked at! We started with this PANDAS thing almost a year ago, and I'm thinking if I had done this all from the beginning, we might be better off right now. But then again, things take time and one learns by experience.

I am so grateful to you and all who share their experiences and new articles.

I would love to keep the whole family on good supplements, but the cost is prohibitive at this point. I need to sort of concentrate on the ones who need it most.

I am convinced dh has some serious underlying issues he needs to work on, mainly through diet (majoy ice-cream addiction!), but he needs to make that decision. I keep hinting, but don't want to nag. At least he made an appointment to get his titers checked and hopefully they will check his thyroid and adrenals too.

If his titers don't reveal anything, I will try to somehow get him on abxs at least before/after we do plasmapheresis.

Rats! As I was typing this I got a call from my dr... my ASO is 237! I did check myself everytime they had strep, always negative... They wanted to put me on amox 875, I don't want to do something I'm pretty positive is not going to work, but at the same time I am nursing a baby... I am going in tomorrow to talk to my doc and see.

Thanks for sharing this. I have had eczema on my hand for years. According to links I found when I went to this article...it can be hard to discern the difference between psoriasis and eczema on the hand...back to the dermatologist.

Thank you for sharing this.

I had psoriasis for 20 years, since it was always very mild it never really bother me.

My question is , if this is the root of the problem, why it happened to my son at the age of 8 and not before?

I'm going to an immunologist (he is the head of UCLA med center) on Monday, I'll discuss this issue with him.

Deby,

Perhaps a series of events happened that finally cause your son's system to cave.

Our son was exposed to a child with RF, got sick but seemed to recover on his own.... 6 months later, he got sick again and his first TIC of a cough started, this went on for an entire year...... sick again in June 2009 and 3 weeks later we had full blown PANDAs.

You can read up on Sydenham's Chorea that also has a delayed response.
