Santi
Dr. K recommended that I do bloodwork on my son for Mycolplasma Pneumonie IgG and Igm because high numbers of these antibodies can contribute to aggression in kids. Has anyone had experience with this? If this is the case, how is it treated? Is this related to PANDAS somehow? Andrea
2girlsmom
We are currently treating our DD for PANDA due to Mycoplasma Pneumonie. Her treatment is Biaxin (antibiotic) for 30 days; we are on day 15. She has most of the PANDAS symptoms but the most worriesome for us mostly aggression, tics, dilated pupils and OCD behaviors. She has never tested postive for strep (rapid and cultured). Her strep titer was 6. The blood test for the Mycoplasma P her numbers were way high. So far so good. The behavior has leveled off, still present but better. She says it is helping with some of her "bad" thoughts. There are plenty of threads dicussing Myco P, do a search and it may answer more of your questions. Edited April 16, 2010 by 2girlsmom

Nita
Dr. K. wrote a prescription to test our son for blood testing for mycoplasma pneumonia. He also is agressive. He said he'd tell us when to have the test done. He is allergic to penicillin and is currently on 500 mg. of arithromycin. He had pneumonia when he was about 2 and is now 13, so I wonder if he's had PANDAS that long.

My ds had pneumonia at 9 months-we have just started this journey and have not gotten any blood tests back...but I wonder b/c aggression is his MAIN problem. Chemar
just to clarify and avoid confusion: PANDAS usually only refers to the strep induced symptoms when other microbes, like Mycoplasma etc are involved, then it is usually referred to as PITAND, or PITANDs, (and sometimes PANDAS-like) PANDAS = Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus PITAND = Pediatric Infection Triggered Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders

It was more than ocd which was alway main issue, but this time it was with rage with aggression. He broke doors, plates, and glasses. He pushed me and left me with bruise. ( this never happened before) His blood tests done 2 months after his exacerbation came back with high ASO titer and high Myco. thereishope
I haven't heard of a Myco P/aggression link before, but I can see aggression being a symptom w/PITAND as it is w/ PANDAS. My son had strep triggers and he got very aggressive. So, if that is your main symptoms, still rule out all possible triggers.....(Just adding adding that clause for anyone newcomers reading this). Phasmid
Very interesting. My son was just placed on clarithromycin by Dr. Trifiletti (NJ) for high Mycoplasma IgG antibody titer. His history includes severe, debilitating vocal and motor tics, OCD (we didn't know this wasn't tics), anxiety, sleep disturbance, ADHD, and yes, aggression. The aggression actually was one of the very first things to show up. This is sort of follow up treatment, since he actually recovered one year ago on vancomycin for intestinal infection. Some symptoms are residual, and since learning this might be PANDAS/PITAND, consulted with Dr. T. So very glad I did! Stephanie2
My son's stool analysis just showed Klebsiella bacteria in his gut which was making him extremely aggressive and bad OCD. We gave him vancomycin and he is much better now. Just FYI. So much more out there than strep. And our doctor explained that strep is always the initial infection, but once pandas is activated, anything can bring up pandas symptoms in the future - viruses, bacteria, etc. He doesn't even make us go for a strep culture anymore b/c there is no way to know what any particular exacerbation is from. He just increases the antibiotic if I even suspect bacteria. (which is great, but in our case the high dose abx causes klebsiella, so then we add vanco, then we add diflucan, then we have to increase probiotics - it's a vicious cycle that we are hoping to escape with IVIG). kimballot
My son has had multiple work ups for immunology issues through his 13 years and - looking back- mycop was always negative. The last work up was 3 years ago with negative myco p. Fast forward to 2010 and Dr. T had us redo the blood work a month ago and myco p was positive. He thought, from the numbers, that the infection was probably a couple of years old... sure enough, 2 1/2 years ago my son had one of his worst OCD episodes and he had negative ASO titers and throat cultures at the time. Had we known to look for mycop we may have been able to treat it and shorten the exacerbation. It is so worth checking into.
