How about bloody noses?

Amy's post about rashes triggered this post. She mentioned her child was havinng more and more bloody noses.

My daughter has been having more frequent and severe bloody noses as well.

 

I've never read that this is a sign or symptom of PANDAS, but am curious is other PANDAS kids get them a lot as well.

 

I imagine it could just be seasonal, too.

Us too. DD8 having lots of them. The doc's say dry air from the heater. Hoping they stop soon.

My son gets them a lot too... but I know a lot of kids who get them a lot so not who are not pandas. My dr. attributes it to the dry air as well and also said it looks like has a capillary or something like that close to the surface that is probably easily irritated. My son gets them at completely random times... middle of the night, middle of school, (I have gotten several calls from the school nurse letting me know he had one at school).

Bloody noses are a daily occurance for us - I always blame them on allergies, dry air, and sinus infections. Interestingly, I met with the school nurse last week and she pulled up my sons file and he had gone 12 calendar days without a bloody nose!! - those were the 10 days he was on biaxin plus 2 more! I believe he was back at the nurses office on day 3 after biaxin ended... hmmm..

My son used to have frequent bloody noses. Once I put a humidifier in his room they stopped (his dry skin improved considerably as well!).

Our dd9 gets a lot of bloody noses too -- particularly during exacerbations. We weren't sure if it was dry skin, seasonal allergies turning into congestion turning into blowing nose/bloody nose. Hard to say. Symptoms were correlated with bloody nose -- but so was giving advil :-) So could have been a number of different factors. Bottom line, yes we got them too. Oh, and we live in a pretty humid place so unlikely to be dry air.

Bloody noses are also considered a symptom of Rheumatic Fever..... My son's friend who had ARF and now PANDAS also had frequent bloody noses.

 

Since RF and Pandas are similar it would make sense its related to illness.

Recent testing has shown my son to be low copper/ceruloplasmin (this was blood and urine together that showed low copper). He is also testing at the very bottom of normal for zinc. This article mentions copper deficiency in relationship to bloody noses. Also, vit K (healthy gut flora is essential for vit K production) could be a factor with the bloody noses. I was also noticiing the mention of B vits being important for the utilization of copper.

 

It sure would be interesting to know what the copper/zinc profiles of more of the kids looked like. This is a very easy thing to get reg. Drs. to test for. Wilson's disease is associated with movement disorders so I think most Dr.s feel justified ordering the tests.

Our son had never had a history of bloody noses, but during an increase of symptoms he started having gushing bloody noses every day. Or doc looked in his nose and said there was some sort of infection. She did not do any tests because she could see something was going on. This was before we were on preventative antibiotics. After starting antibiotics, the bloody noses stopped. I would wonder if strep or something could be hanging out in the nasal passages. Of course, dry weather is also a very realistic explanation.

I also had frequent bloody noses as a child. They went away very roughly around age 18, without any treatment for the PANDAS or lyme or whatever it is, although they have popped back up here and there infrequently in adulthood.

We live in a humid place? Northern CA is not humid...Florida and Hawaii are!

This is very interesting. Our DD's PANDAS started in extreme at 3 yo and so did the bloody noses. The bloody noses were also EXTREME. Like unable to stop them for at least 20 mins. Huge amounts of blood. Because she was so little and spent most of her 3rd year screaming, we attributed the bleeding noses to the intensity of her screaming. But, as the 14 month long PANDAS episode waned, the frequency of bloody noses also decresed. Now, she might get a drop of blood here and there but that is it. Lord, do I hate bloody noses!!! I do think there is a correlation here...
