Has anyone else had vision problems?

Recommended Posts

At the urging of two Occupational Therapists, I took my son to a developmental opthalmologist. She diagnosed him with covergence insufficiency and ocular motor dysfunction. We did vision therapy for 5 months. I saw no improvments. She told me he had 20 20 vision but wanted him to wear the weakest prescription glasses just to see if it would help. He doesnt complain about the glasses so we make him wear them.

I wonder though if any of you have run into this issue. He is dx PDD-NOS since the age of 5. he is 8 now and is so afraid to ride a bike, even with training wheels. he has been doing so well lately behaviorally and now that the weather is getting nicer he is riding his scooter and actually playing baseball with the neighborhood kids. He is really hitting the ball!!! So maybe we will try the bike before we go down hill again. We dont see Dr K until the 31st. Funny thing is that with all this motivation and great behavior, his groin rash is gone!!!!

Our son was dx'd with convergence insufficiency along with accommodative insufficiency, he had one eye starting to shutdown (amblyopia) because of the binocular problems. Saccades & pursuits were not good. Vision therapy pretty much did the trick. Pretty intense therapy for 32 sessions (2x week plus homework each other day). Frankly, I do not know how we accomplished the homework, as we look back!!

His eyes often ached. I thought it was strep/PANDAS related, but the docs didn't think so. He seldom complains about this now on abx &post IVIG. He was very sensitive to the light when younger.

The optometrist said that they have had several kids with PANDAS have vision therapy.

We did one session with therapist per weeek and then 5 at home per week for 5 months. I am so confused about this. He tells me that it doesnt bother him anymore and when he forgot his glasses yesterday he said they dont help him and he can do his school work fine without them. Every once in a while he will put one hand over his eye and lean into as he is writing and I think this is usually when he is an emotional mess. I guess I never documented it. Some days he comes home with good handwriting and some days he doesnt.

Maybe the 5 months did help him. We were going to take a break and then go back but I had a huge fight with the insurance company who told me it was covered and then told me it was not! I never had him re-checked for progress.

We are in such a good spot right now with behaviors. Since the weather has broke he has been outside with the neighbor kids playing baseball. Hes acutally hitting the ball. I see these great explosions of behavior and then they start to go away.

Should I go back and have a progress check done? We are going to see Dr K next week for our 1st appt. I wonder if he will be able to shed some light on this.

thanks for your response.

P.S. I see you have done IVIG. Can I ask what other issues your son had? Do you think the IVIG helped? Do you have a diagnosis code for the IVIG procedure and a dignosis code. I am curiuos to see if insurance will pay

a few years ago when I was about 17 (05-06)I was having a lot of vision problems and floaters. I went to 100 specialists and no one could tell me anything. It was around the time I felt like I had relapsed with the PANDAS. I also had sensitivity to light and "haloing" when i would look at someone against a light surface, I still have these problems but not nearly as bad.

Not sure what has been going on in the last 4 or 5 days. DS4 has probably had another viral infection and a worsening of tics, anxiety, tummy pains and then yesterday he told me his left eye was "misty". It is so hard to know what a 4yr old means by this. We ended up being seen at the local children's hospital who couldn't come up with any explanation. They said there was nothing to find examining him. He says it has been a little better today but still misty. Am I wrong in thinking he might be describing blurred vision? Has anyone else experienced this with PANDAS? Our neuro doc says it is "atypical"! One other suggestion was a migraine.

On top of all that he has been really sad today, crying a lot and not wanting to be left alone at all.

I feel like I am totally at a loss with all this right now. It is so scary the way these different symptoms just appear overnight. I am so worried I am giving myself a stomach ache.

:(

What a lot of eye related symptoms. I am so surprised as the Drs here don't seem to make a connection between his eyes and the PANDAS but so many of you describe really similar symptoms.

It really helps to know I am not alone with all of this. Sometimes the drs make me feel like I am wasting their time.

Hi,

Both my kids have PANDAS. My older son ( 10 yrs) got glasses with astigmatism and myopia which is increasing rapidly every 5-6 months. We dont have glasses in both mine and my husbands family. I believe it is because of the PANDAS ....

My younger son ( 5yrs) started having PANDAS from last may.

His symptoms were..

1] joint pains

2] TICS

3] frequent urination

4] blurry eyes ( big issue even now)

The blurry eyes ....he says that it happens for 20-30 seconds and cannot move during that time and it looks like an old fashion movie ( his words) It goes away if he blinks and it keeps happening through out the day. It was very bad when his PANDAS started and again from last month when his TICS also increaseed.

This made me think it is all PANDAS related even with my older son. May be the inflammation in the brain is causing all this.

I have taken him to opthamologist last week. He has myopia( small) right eye and long sight and astigmatism in his left eye. He has asked us to check again after 6 months.

I was scared that this was absent siezsures. Have an appointment with the neurologiat next month. Will let you know what he says.

Odd that you should ask that. I was just putting 2 and 2 together with the whole..."mom, I have an eye lash in my eye" statement. Just realizing that there is a conection to when he is struggling through an episode! Wonder what it means? Maybe just another form of "tic"???

  • 8 years later...

My daughter woke up one morning started her school work (home schooled) said she couldnt read i said why she said she couldnt see. Took her for eye health check lady said she needed to see a specialist. So she went to a specialist and 7 hour visit showed sever vision change a big delay in the left eye an small delay in right eye for optic nerve. All testing was abnormal. Mri and scans od head brain all were normal. The only other thing the dr noted was that she had thinning of the retina and the tech said her pupils were bigger than most asked 3 times if her eyes had been dilated yet. For her sec apt her vision had improved almost bck to normal in right eye good improvement in left the delay improved as well still not 100% she goes bck in for repeat of testing depending on those results glasses are the next step for helping with remaining vision change since this began her ocd symptoms are bck with a vengeance and than some new med med increase i feel like she is bck at square one and no answers no one can completely say if her vision change is from the pandas she has also be suffering with migraines once in awhile but not during vision change at least it didnt present as a migrain
