I know there has been some discussion about steriods making things worse over

So if anyone is reading i would really like you to participate

I know chemars husband had a negative reaction to prednisone, exasperateing his tics

has anyone had the same experience and has anyone used steroids for any reasons and NOT had a reaction...

2 docs i'm consluting with both strongly suggest the prednisone

I would love any and all replies

Chemar......was your husbands need for predisone due to an injury,,,it was his back correct? i mean was his back just hurting him or did he fall or something

also how soon after the incident did he start the prednisone...

Thanks Chemar for all your help

And thanks to all who replay...

yes, my husband had herniated discs from a car accident and was given the prednisone about a month later when he was still in severe pain from inflammation of the sciatic nerve

the prednisone burst triggered tics he had not had since childhood and now, over a year later, his tics are still elevated way above pre steroid levels

when my son was first dx with crohn's, the pediatric GI specialist wanted to give him prednisone too, but as soon as he heard of my son's Tourette Syndrome, he agreed that it was risky to give steroids to someone with TS because of the potential to trigger tics. My understanding is that it is because of the stimulation of dopamine by the steroids?

so it isnt that steroids will trigger tics for everyone, but that they can potentially trigger tics for those in the Tourette spectrum because of the dopamine issue

fixit,

my husband had ts as a child and outgrew it. About 2 years ago he was given a steriod for what I woud call muscle gramping. he was all doubled over and could not streighten up. The steriods did not bring back any ts in him at all. I do not know what kind of steriods he was on tho.

FWIW, I now believe that my tic was caused by using Flonase, a corticosteroid, when I was 17, shortly before my tic began.

Perhaps I was genetically predisposed to it and the Flonase set me over the threshold.

This is terrible news about steroids. I was planning on doing HRT when I got older, but now that's not an option (unless they've cured tics by then!).

What's HRT?
