We switched from Amoxicillin/clav to pen injection monthly

We switched from high dose antibiotic ( amoxicillin/clav ) to pen injection 1.2million I.U monthly by doctor. I don’t know what the pen injection monthly will do for my son. I will see. For me, pen injection is more like Prophylactic dose , maybe it will be OK for re-infection from the strep, but would not do anything for current symptoms – I hope I am wrong and it will do something to help my son.

Please post if anyone has some comments on pen injection monthly other than painful only.

And anybody know how much it releases everyday equivalent the ?mg of amoxicillin about?

Also I have questions for you who are doing long term high dose antibiotic:

1.When your doctor prescribes high dose abx for long term, does doctor prescribe something else which must be taken along with abx? Or doctor just say “ taking some probiotic as well with abx”. That’s it, nothing else?

2.What risks might happen during high dose long term? I guess there are maybe many of them potentially, but in generally it will be no big problem?

3.So taking high dose proper probiotic will eliminate major side effect coming from abx for sure? Regarding the probiotic dose, the higher the better? What is the right dose?

4.Some side effects from abx if occurs would be un-reversible or it would go away once OFF the abx?

Above questions might be stupid or so complicated to answer, they are just always in my mind and bothering me, scaring me, fidgeting me everyday while I put my son on high dose abx without doctor’s guide.

Well, if I saw his 90%-100% improvement with abx I would feel a lot of better, but it was not, I did see some improvement but not that big improvement though. And I found he would be doing better with antibiotic along with a pscy med (for example: Aripiprazole ) as well. Either one alone would not do big help. This confuses me also why it is that?

Still need time to figure it out exactly.

When I did my son high dose amoxicillin/clav, I did following as well:

1.probiotic --- Culturelle, one capsule at the noon and one other probiotic in the evening 2 hours away from abx. Some yoghourt which contains some probiotic as well anytime he wanted in the day.

2.monthly blood check for liver, kidney function, ASO, blood routine examination, routine urinalysis.

So far nothing wrong were found, just this ASO is still high, @390 always for about 6 months ( normal is 0-200). Well I should mention as well, we did IVIG last July, before we did that his ASO was 290, after IVIG and with abx, his ASO was always around 390. Don’t really know what that means.

Throat culture twice, always neg.

3.Omega 3 -- Kirkland Fish Oil/omega3 Concentrate, one capsule tid.

4.Vitamin D3 – 2000 IU, once every other day.

5.Sometimes Epsom salt bath

Just about that. Is there anything I must do and missed??? I need to collect all information in case I need to go back to high dose.

Thanks

My holistic md (who is also a lyme specialist) uses the once monthly bicillin shots for PANDAS patients and he said they are having a lot of success. Next time I see him I will ask him how it works.

We have been on antibiotics for 18 months for lyme and no problems. We take four probiotic pearls a day (kids too) and I buy the kind my doctor sells that can be taken at the same time as antibiotics. They are coated or something so they are not killed by the antibiotics. It is much more convenient to have my son pop all his pills at once. He is not too keen on taking them in the first place so its just easier to deal with it twice a day, rather than three or four times a day. The kind my doctor uses is "Integrative Therapeutics Probiotic Pearls." They are tiny and young kids could easily swallow them. My docs also check liver enzymes (aso) to make sure it isn't causing any problems. That aso number is high. Did your doctor tell you to do anything to help the liver? My doctor prescribed milk thistle and vitamin b complex when one of us had slightly elevated aso (120). My doctor is also a nutritionist. The fish oil, vitamin d and salt baths are great for him!

Hi lyme mom,

Thanks. Please once you have chance to see your doctor, ask about benzathine penicillin ( is it same as bicillin??) shot monthly for PANDAS.

Hi CZL,

I just googled it and it looks like they are two names for the same thing. He told me that it is a very high dose (like over a million something).

Thanks. His dose is 1.2million. Maybe not high enough. But this is only dose doctor could give.

My brother in law said that he has seen liver damage due to antibiotics when he's done surgery.Personally, when compared to what happens to the brain, I would still stick with the abx.

I also give a multivitamin that has DHA in it.

How does your brother in law know it was abx that caused the liver damage he's seen?

Good heavens Vickie--

Please do ask him, to clarify and substantiate--Would he be able to pass along some cautions, studies, etc.? Information is great--it is just that we need to know what we are up against--

I know I keep repeating myself-- ...BUT I have two kids that have had sudden-onset moderate to severe OCD (+ facial tics) essentially "cured" by antibiotics. I cannot say this from a more heartfelt position--but strong long-term antibiotics have been the KEY to their healing.

This is just too bazaare to make up isn't it! :) If I had not lived it, I may not have believed it.

Good night all--

Please understand that I am just repeating what he said. I am not saying do not do long term antibiotics. I understand they are needed. In this thread it was asked if anyone knew of any possible side effects.

He did say, in regards to proph abx, that he does think PANDAS would be an exception due to what happens to the brain.

Tmom, I don't know why this struck me as hilarious...I actually laughed till there were tears rolling....It seems like we've been tossed into some strange parallel universe. When people from the "real" world ask about it...I find myself hesitating, trying to find a way to answer w/o sounding like a complete nutjob. I never quite pull it off! Guess that's what makes this forum so special!

:)Peglem--I understand entirely-- We are still on full strength antibiotics, and not to worry Vickie--I just spent 10 minutes looking up toxic megacolon and c.diffile--yikes! All I have to say is this IS scary -- but hopefully, prayerfully we will see our children through this rat-maze and to the other side without a horrible complication along the way.

I know you were not saying to not use abx Vickie. I am fully supportive of information, and quite frankly appreciate your BiL's comment. For us the good news is that antibiotics have made a significant positive change in our two children--how incredible is that! Who ever heard of OCD going away with antibiotics?

Given the same circumstances I would have done it the same--well, hopefully sooner!

Peglem, I completely understand about trying to tell others about Ps...they do get that "funny" look on their faces, even the nice ones:) --and to all a good night.

I am almost positive that he told me that is the dose they use and he said they are having a lot of success.
