Im kindof confused about this too.Dr T didnt seem overly concerned about yeast with danny but did recomend florestor(sp) and I found it at costco 50 pills for 32.00$ not bad.Im not sure if his behavior changes from probiotics but How would I know if its teast if I dont do a test? Ive had tests before and havent had yeast issues. But havent been on antibiotics like this before either.HUMMM any one have anything to add?

I think its important to use probiotics especially while on abx, so as to replace the 'good bacteria'. Probiotics are not to 'get rid of yeast', its to 'prevent it'. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure after the yeast problem is already started, you would begin to be aware of it via symptoms somewhere, and more than probiotics will be needed at that point. iIs possible some of you are seeing a reaction because it is from the initial use and it may not really be from the probiotics, but from the bad yeast dying off. after a bit, it should clear out and those reactions will not be seen. I've had my son on probiotics for years, just to try and make sure he doesn't get further problems, and have his tic symptoms of other issues possible escalate because of it. Having good gut health is kind of importaint in kids with these symptoms, PANDAS induced or not.

Peg,

I think the statement made to the effect of "PANDAS kids usually don't get yeast infections', is a little broad, but that's just my opinion. maybe she meant its not usually a problem, but again, that's kind of presumptuous. I'm sure your'e aware that yeast treatment is one of the key treatments for autism. (not tht it helps all, but its certainly one of hte protocols). Do you think she was trying to differentiate PANDAS from the autism when she said that?

I think what was happening here, is that Dr. L was processing a lot of information at the same time and was kinda thinking out loud...trying to figure out if my daughter really has PANDAS or not. My daughter's case is less obvious than most and she is very difficult to examine (though, I have to say Dr. L was able to deduce much more than ANY of the many specialists we've seen, just by careful observation). So, if her experience is mostly with overactive immune PANDAS, then her experience would be that yeast isn't usually a problem, and I don't know how many parents are actually reporting yeast issues to her, since they are mainly seeing her for strep isssues, you know?

I hope nobody thinks I'm trying to nit-pick on Dr.L or call her expertise into question...I'm very impressed with her and so glad to have had the opportunity of her help.

We see Dr. L and my son has definite yeast issues... for a long time. I asked her something about his yeast treatments and she told me she didn't really know much about it. But she did say to make sure and give a good probiotic to help with it. It would be great to have adoctor that knows everything... but probably not realistic. We are lucky to have access to her for the PANDAS information.

I am curious about the underactive immune system theory. My son is sick a lot.... might be time to get some tests.

Now I'm really puzzled about this over-active/under-active immune system. When Dr. T posted his paper-in-progress discussion, I guessed I was in the overactive subgroup, with the 186 CamK score being in the "high end PANDAS range", and also all the constant food allergies sounded like overactivity to me, although he did not list it. All the other tests have not been reported yet. I'll be getting some results on Tuesday I hope. But, I do get sick a bit more than others, am generally weak, and I see the logic of looking that as under-active, and am quite sure yeast has been a long-standing issue. Hmm...

Sorry, Peglem...I must have been thinking about a different child....that is a lot of ilness as a child.

How did she determine PANDAS in your daughter?

The pattern of being able to know strep would be positive just based on behavior, CamK 242% (although she did say she couldn't base treatment on that alone, as they are uncertain what it really means), anti-D2 antibodies (clearly, high anti-neuronal antibodies should not be there!), positive behavioral response to abx and steroids, and she felt based on the low IgG it would be worth trying IVIG.

Interesting. I have wondered about this, too. I've spent years on antibiotics, with very few yeast infections - could count on one hand. I never took probiotics and have always wondered why I didn't have issues with yeast. But I'm a low-immune type based on immune work-up, not an over-immune type (if that distinction is valid, which I still wonder about). Go figure. My boys have never had yeast issues either despite all of the antibiotics.

Actually, Dr. K told me the same thing when I went to see him...that yeast issues rarely occur and parents think their kids have yeast when they don't. NOT saying this is the case for all....just sayin'.

Same here Amy...two boys on continuos antibiotics over 2 years...no yeast...very "haphazzard" (like EAMom) said, about giving probiotics. I actually sometimes think they react to the probiotics negatively (well, my younger son) when I give them...would make sense with an over active immune system.

Peglem...now that you are her patient...just call or e-mail her and ask her what she meant by that. Don't know about IVIG and yeast....you could ask her that, too.
