Vaginal Strep

Recommended Posts

Many are talking about vaginal strep. Can you tell me what it looks like? I know discharge is mentioned, but does it have to have discharge?

I have a 3 year old girl. My other kids are boys. So (except for myself) I don't have anything to compare to and I have been lucky to never had issues of my own. I've never even had a yeast infection. Sorry, men, I know that too much information!

Sometimes she says it hurts down there. It'll be red, but diaper cream clears it up in a day. Since the cream clears it up, is it just irritation?

She is potty trained.

Here's how it shows up in my girls. First they will start to wipe excessively saying that it feels like they pee'd a little again or didn't wipe well enough. We've come to know it as "the wettness". It is odorless and looks like water (no substance to it). It can be accompanied by redness, pain, burning and itching but the burning and itching is not bad and not consistent. If it goes on long enough, it is always red and painful and eventually will get a discharge that is yellow and very icky and the child is very irritated at this point. My dd was wearing pantiliners every day by the time we got diagnosed. Now I know exactly when it comes back because one day they will say it doesn't feel right down there and the next day the wetness will be back.

I hope that helps.

How did you get a vaginal strep diagnosis? My daughter has all these symptoms and I tried to talk to her doctor about it and he said she wouldn't really get strep in her vaginal area or that it wouldn't cause your body to produce strep antibodies or something like that. She has had numerous bladder infections as well, and he said we should check for strep in her bladder. But he dismissed the idea that vaginal strep could be an issue.

I never knew this could be strep. I always assumed it was Candida. This is why I waited so long to take her in. I finally took her because my other daughter started flipping out in class and basically went nuts (her first completely obvious episode). So I hauled them both in. Our Dan! took one look and said he thought it was strep. We got lucky I guess. But it is totally possible to get it there. They use the same type of swab and culture it. It was strep A.

If your Ped will not do it, even after telling him about our case, I would highly recommend taking her into urgent care and saying she has a history of vag. strep and you would like it cultured.

here's some vaginal strep tidbits I posted on another thread:

So, if a child has this, would the strep (DNase)Titers be elevated, I wonder??

One of my dd's did not have elevated titers and the other had elevated (although not super high, they were high).
