Antibiotics

Vickie,

My daughter also starts kindergarten in a week. I am extremely concerned about it as well. My daughter is really anxious about it too which makes me even more nervous. Obviously, I have been in contact with her teacher and they have met each other. Her teachers seems great and it eases my mind a bit. She asked me if I need to know about any sicknesses in the class. I told her definitely strep, but then I started thinking about other viruses triggering an episode and I started to feel like I was going to have a panic attack. I mean if the teacher has to contact me EVERY TIME a child has a virus, I am sure it will be every day. My head is spinning.

She is not on prophylactic antibiotics either. I have heard of doctors within a three hour drive that do support the use of them. Our pediatrician will not prescribe. Viruses seem to be an issue for us as well so I am struggling with what to do. I am certainly willing to drive to see a doctor, but I am not sure if I want to do that at this point. I am just concerned that in November when illnesses are going around and we have another episode, I will be in a panic and scramble.

You are not alone....

I just have to ask, am I the only one who can't get propholactic antibiotics for my son? Not even amoxicillan. Is it an Ohio thing? I just don't understand. It seems like everyone else gets it rather easy. I've tried being polite, I've tried giving info, I've tried being a nag, I've tried different offices. I just don't get it.

Does anyone know anything over the counter that helps the immune system, that is okay to take w/ an autoimmune disorder that may help to prevent strep? My son starts kindergarten in a week and his teacher informed me that she is very susceptible to strep and had it twice last year. I feel I am sending my 5 year old into a shark tank with a slab of raw meat on him. I remember being excited for my older son when he started school. The new experiences, making friends, etc. With my 5 year old, it's the total opposite.

I feel lucky that our doctor agreed to it. He's a Dan! doctor and very against antibiotics due to the yeast factor. But he knew about PANDAS and agreed to try it based on the immerging data. I don't know how long we will be able to get a prescription from him. I feel like I need to hoard them!

We also have a teacher in our school who is prone to strep. I made sure to tell the principal to ensure that was not either one of my kids teacher. Are you able to ask for a different one? I realize this may not be possible, maybe only one K class, etc.

I know of things that should boost the immune system but I don't know which ones are safe for our kids.....

LOL

I'm sorry you live in Ohio. DH (Buster) says to tell you that Canada is only 400 miles away.

Actually, DH has some relatives (grandparents etc.) in Ohio...his experiences with the doctors there are just terrible.

Hey Vickie,

I conducted a pediatric training in OH last year and have some contacts there. If you'd like, I can email a few specialists and also the Exec Dir for the OH Chapter of the AAP. Happy to try and find a pediatrician for you who believes in PANDAS. Just let me know.

I do think a DAN doctor will be your best bet though.

Nancy please email me this OH list also. We are in Canton, OH and I have had little luck with Dr's and PANDAS. It is like OH has been tainted with nonbelievers. My mom says why do you keep going to different Dr's? You need to stick to one and follow what they say. I am like mom they don't get it and aren't willing to listen to the research on PANDAS. I really need an OH Dr. badly. We have had issues with psychologists, psychiatrists, immunologists and neurologists in OH. Please send your contacts our way!

Online pharmacies may be an option for some people. Some offer telephone consultations with physicians.

Hi Michele,

I just emailed my pediatric contacts in OH to see who they can recommend -- both pediatricians and specialists who understand PANDAS and who know how to treat it. I will report back any referrals I get. I can't promise anything but maybe we'll find someone for you.

Vickie,

I don't blame you for not wanting to transfer your records until you know for sure. I suggest doing a 15 minute in person consult before determining if it is a good fit and if you want to transfer your records.

The DAN doctors do understand PANDAS and most will treat with prophylactic antibiotics and IVIG if necessary. I travel 3 1/2 hours each way to our DAN doctor in NY state and it is well worth it. In the beginning we went monthly, but now we only see him every 3 or 4 months. He responds to emails and does telephone consults. Makes it much easier during the winter months. Have you checked out the DAN Doctors in OH or neighboring states?

The referrals I get from my pediatric contacts in OH will likely NOT be DAN doctors but if you are interested in seeing a DAN doctor I can check around. I do know there is a terrific geneticist in OH at the Cleveland Clinic-- Marvin Natowicz, MD, PhD. His specialty is autism and metabolic disorders. Perhaps if you call his office his staff might be able to recommend someone.

Soon as I hear back anything I will post whatever referrals I get.

Nancy

The problem with an online pharmacy is I still have to let the peds' office know he is on antibiotics then. I can see a big can of worms opening up. I need to have a trust w/ the office if I need an immediate strep test or such. Since he doesn't get strep symptoms, just behvaior changes, I have to rely on the office beliveing what I say.

It appears my son has setbacks w/ viruses as well, but strep is still the main culprit for him. Having his tonsils out did not seems to help. In our school district, you cannot ask for a specific teacher or request to change. I think that would especially hard since he has an IEP for speech and they probably divided up the IEP kids so too many wouldn't be in one class. Can you believe out of 80 kindergartenters, 13 have IEP's already! They started in the Early Childhood prgram and are now in kindergarten. She said that was unheard of.

Nancy, I called the office near me w/ the developmental ped on staff. They said they would not do proph antibiotics, but the docs might agree to give meds if I can prove he's been exposed. I'm waiting for him to call back & discuss that further. I know it may be an odd phone call w/ an odd request, but I don't want to transfer all records just to be in the same issue. That list would be great. I am going to see what this current office says. They are 5 min away & that's very convenient w/ 3 kids.Hopefully, they will call today. Even if they give meds if he's exposed is better than my current office. When my husband had strep, my current office wouldn't give Josh meds until he had a + strep test. Well, a few days later, Josh gave them that + strep test.

For those parents who are worried about sending their kids back to school and risk being exposed to more strep, there are other measures you can take to try and prevent it (in addition to the prophylactic antibiotics).

Please check out my post at

http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...art=#entry36129 re Xylitol nasal spray, Biotene, and Papaya enyzmes. I plan to build this into my daughter's regime. I spoke with our DAN doctor and he is fine with it.

In addition, I give my daughter lots of Transfer Factor and Querciplex on a daily basis and I find this REALLY helps. And I have her use Ocean Sinus Rinse for Irregation and Moisture.

Just a few thoughts...
