swine flu

Recommended Posts

Hi- I'm starting to worry about the Swine flu. My daughter and I already had the flu and we both had it pretty bad. My daughter had the flu for a week and I had it for 5 days but my cough lasted for 2 and half months. We both used oscillococcinum the homopathic medicine. I'm watching the news alot and they keep talking about the tamiflu. So far the flu is staying mild but if it does start getting severe would you give your kids tamiflu?

I'm probably worrying to soon, but just curious. Thank you

Hi CSP- Thanks, and true. My husband swears by the b's. I just saw commercial on the show The Doctor's about the swine flu and they said something about building your immune system too. I think that show is going to be on tomorrow. You can't get away from hearing about it! I just thought of something last time I had the Flu my asthma and allergies kicked in, im going to start my singular today. THANKS

Dr. Mercola just wrote a 10 page article about the swine flu. He had so many hits it temporarily crashed his server. I finally got it up. The gist is--

This is a bunch of hype. The CDC will push for massive vaccinations to protect folks from it just like they did in the 70s. He points out that there were more deaths in the 70s due to the swine flu vax than to the actual flu. Something to ponder.

He also writes a nice history of the pandemic in 1918 and how studies have shown that it was not the flu that killed the folks but strep. Today we have antibiotics and can treat it safely and effectively.

So I say, go about your business and turn off the news. The media is just trying to freak everyone out. Take your vitamins, drink your fluids, call your doctor if you get sick but don't worry beyond that.

Here's his article: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles.../Swine-Flu.aspx

Maryann,

I don't think they are going to give anyone Tamiflu who doesn't have a confirmed case. I'm watching all of the news pretty carefully on this whole thing. Still so many unknowns and conflicting reports, shoddy info etc. If it became a reality for someone in my family, you can bet I would be googling away trying to guage the ole risk/reward of Tamiflu.

The top of my list of prevention right now is Vit D or better yet, sunshine if you can get it. The more skin exposure the better. Gosh this nude sunbathing is chilly yet here tho ^_^ Really, I think the recommendation is 20 minutes of 80% exposure. Supposed to generate up to 20,000 IUs, but this time of year probably too weak of rays (northern states) to generate anywhere near that much that quickly.

My other possible flu fighters include elderberry extract, olive leaf extract, garlic, vit C and anti inflams like pom juice (pom wonderful is one that I believe has not been totally destroyed by processing) pure tart cherry syrup, motrin etc.

I'm no where near convinced that this is any horrendous threat at this point but seems way to early to really tell. One theory to keep in mind regarding immune response

also, since inflam serves it's purpose in infection fighting, not really thinking of prevention, just use while ill to keep it in check, along with antioxidants that most provide. Saw in a parent's notes from 2009 DAN conference that pure grape juice is still considered great antioxidant. Resveratrol as supplement is something we have never used, but might be quite beneficial too.

Caryn,

This is another take on the 1918 epidemic. Haven't read Mercola's article, but I do remember movement disorders being talked about in the 1918 events.

This is a lady that I would trust any day of any week. She combines a lot of common sense with science (and the person that I have learned the very most from regarding vaccines). I read everything that I can get my hands on that she writes. I found this concerning.

Before I go any further, let me clearly state what I believe. This virus cannot possible be a natural virus, developed in pigs in Mexico. Anyone who says this is a natural mutant, has gone some really tough questions to answer to justify such a statement. I believe this can only be a laboratory constructed virus. Why? Read on.

Yikes...Baxter mistakenly shipped live material (and they are working on the vaccine for this flu!) and a swine strain blew it's top on a train! Not hard to see where the varied mix of viral genes in this new strain and these types of errors could result in something "getting loose," that wasn't supposed to.

http://www.torontosun.com/news/canada/2009...27/8560781.html

The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabelled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany.

The contamination incident, which is being investigated by the four European countries, came to light when the subcontractor in the Czech Republic inoculated ferrets with the product and they died. Ferrets shouldn’t die from exposure to human H3N2 flu viruses.

Public health authorities concerned about what has been described as a “serious error” on Baxter’s part have assumed the death of the ferrets meant the H5N1 virus in the product was live. But the company, Baxter International Inc., has been parsimonious about the amount of information it has released about the event.

On Friday, the company’s director of global bioscience communications confirmed what scientists have suspected.

“It was live,” Christopher Bona said in an email.

The contaminated product, which Baxter calls “experimental virus material,” was made at the Orth-Donau research facility. Baxter makes its flu vaccine — including a human H5N1 vaccine for which a licence is expected shortly — at a facility in the Czech Republic.

People familiar with biosecurity rules are dismayed by evidence that human H3N2 and avian H5N1 viruses somehow co-mingled in the Orth-Donau facility. That is a dangerous practice that should not be allowed to happen, a number of experts insisted.

Baxter To Develop Swine Flu Vaccine Despite Bird Flu Scandal

A U.S. based pharmaceutical company that just weeks ago was involved in a scandal involving vaccines tainted with deadly avian flu virus has been chosen to head up efforts to produce a vaccine for the Mexican swine flu that has seemingly migrated into the U.S. and Europe

Swine Flu Container Explodes on Train

When a container holding swine flu exploded on a Swiss train on Monday, it could have led to a nightmare scenario. Luckily the virus was not the mutated swine flu that has killed around 150 people in Mexico and that has already spread to parts of Europe.

and

The containers were hermetically sealed and cooled with dry ice. However, it seems the dry ice was not packed correctly and it melted during the journey. The gas coming from the containers then built up too much pressure and the ampoules exploded, as the train was pulling into a station.

Kim,

Read Mercola's article.

He talks about the 1918 flu leading to strep infections that killed people. It wasn't the flu that caused their deaths, but the strep. So movement disorders would probably fit that theory as we know today about antibiotics and PANDAS.

Swine flu symptoms are typically mild and clear up on their own without medical attention or antivirals.

However, sometimes a virus will make two appearances... the first time it is relatively mild (like swine flu now), and then it comes back a year later, mutated, and kills everyone (ok, only 50% of the people).

Hopefully swine flu will mutate into something weaker.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but it's not *technically* swine flu. What everyone is calling "swine flu" is actually a mix of human flu, swine flu, and avian (bird) flu.

I heard a little snippet on Fox news this morning. Wasn't sure I heard right. Something was said about the new swine flu originating in eggs used for vaccine production (something like that). I just got a chance to search the net for anything relating to what I thought I heard. Several searches turned up nothing. Finally went to the FOX news site and lo and behold. Will be interesting to see if the "discredit the researcher" game begins, or if the waters can be muddied to the point that it just fades into the woodwork as the fear of a fall pandemic takes center stage.

would you give your kids tamiflu?

We recently had the flu and I gave tamiflu to my girls and myself. It really helped me and my 6 yr old. But my 7 yr old started acting really crazy and started showing signs of tics and tourettes (behavior that I had never seen before, she's an ADHD/possible PANDAS kid with signs of OCD). I would not want to give her tamiflu again even though I'm not sure if it was the tamiflu or the flu that have her those symptoms. Hopefully it won't get to that point with the swine flu!

Susan,

I'm very sorry to hear that your daughter had that reaction. That's what puts us btwn a rock and a hard place with this stuff. Not only do we have the worries that go along with something like a flu pandemic, we have the added stress of wondering what's worse, the disease or the "cure."

This page has some accounts (mostly bad.. a few good) of Tamiflu use. I would think that people who have an adverse effect are going to be much more likely to post about it than people who seem to be helped by it tho.

Thanks for the link Kim, I hear you about adverse effect reactions being posted more than positive, but still, it's interesting to read up and try to put all the info to good use... In your other post about vit D and antioxidants, it made me remember that I was checking out this the other day....

Have you (or anyone) happen to run across anything like this yet?
