Hi,

I am trying to be dairy free with my son. Is it ok for him to have rice milk? Hopefully this is not a silly question but the diet thing is the hardest thing that I have done. Thanks>

Hi Dee

as far as i know Rice Milk is fine

when we did our trial dairy elimination we used goats milk which my son enjoyed. we got it (along with goats milk cheese etc) at Wholefoods or Chamberlins

Goats milk is fine when needing to eliminate dairy products

Hi Chemar,

thanks for the information. I was thinking of goats milk but his testing came back showing sensitvity to goats milk and cows milk so I will just keep him on the rice milk. Thanks for the help.

hi dee,

we use westsoy brand rice milk and have for several years now. my so doesn't even like the tast of regular milk now. Rice Dream used to have an ingredient in it that was considered gluten (don't know if that is still so, but) so if you are gluten free, best to go with the WestSoy brand. We also use a brand of cookies called Pam's, found in the health food store that is dairy and gluten free. the flavors are chocolate chip, ginger and shortbread pecan, and my son goes for the chocolate chip okay, he likes to soak it in the rice milk.

dee,

this seems to be okay. I know a few years ago our Dan told us that Rice Dream had something that may have been like barley or something in a minute amount, but I believe they may have since removed it. These ingredients are okay. you could check their website just to make sure. there will probably be mention of it if it was a "used to be".

We use Trader Joe's rice milk.

I checked with Rice Dream and did scads of research. They never changed their formulation. Their labeling has to do with government regulations. The stuff in Canada will not say 'gluten free' on it but the stuff in the states will. States are more lax on regulating gluten then Europe and I believe Canada is closer in line w/ European standards.

The barley is still in there in the U.S. version. Just the label is different.

If you are using it sparingly it is probably fine. The goal is to keep the gluten down to a minute amount (complete removal is impossible due to a multitude of reasons). We use it and also goat milk.

If you are dealing with a milk protein allergy the goat milk probably will not work for you. Goat milk is closer to human milk than cow milk and easier to digest but folks with milk allergies cannot substitute according to many folks on the food allergy lists I belong to.

If you are removing dairy completely you do need to watch dietary levels of tryptophan as milk is a major source of tryptophan. We supplemented with it when Tigger was dairy free for 6 months. Tryptophan is helpful for tics as well. Now he gets dairy in moderation.

Removing milk is common for folks with 'leaky gut syndrome' and many can reintroduce after the gut has healed.

Milk substitutes are:

Rice milk

Coconut Milk (I get the canned coconut milk from Trader Joe's-- no artificials)

Soy Milk (we don't use-- too much bad info in regards to hormonal issues)-- I think in moderation it might be okay but I would be leery of making it a daily staple.

Water and an extra egg (in baking).
