myrose Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 Okay let me start by saying that the BIG SUNSHINE state is not so sunny lately!!!! Its literally FREEZING here!!!! Of course my daughter came down with a stuffed nose, then it hit me, then my husband. We hardly ever have to visit the doctor for sickness but after our noses would not clear and we could continue to blow them all day....we all went into a clinic tonight. All three of us were precribed an antibiotic for sinus infections. I was given Zpac (sure I spelled that wrong, but I never take antibiotics so do not know their names well) But its one pill for 3 days at 500mg each. My daughter is allergic to Penicillin so when she needs an antibiotic she usually gets a liquid zythromax (sure I spelled that wrong too) She would have to take that for I think 5 days if I remember correcly. The problem we always had with that is the taste was awful for her no matter what we put it in! She would usually spit some out and lets just say it was an awful 5 days for all of us here. So tonight I asked if it was possible for her to have an antibiotic in a pill form that she could just take with water and swallow. So the doc at the clinic prescribed SMZ/TMP regular strength tabs 20. Anyone heard of this, I have done some research and do not like what I have read but I can only find comments from users who were on 800-1200. In other words just adult doses. It seems to cover quite alot of bacterial infections and also is like two antiobiotics in one. It seems to also be used as an antibitoic to prevent as well. Read a bit just now and kind of got overwhelmed....anyone have any thoughts or history with it??? I would really appreciate your input. I hate taking something new....now I have to put on my eagle eyes and watch her to see if we have a reaction or a bad side effect like we did with the penicillin. She has to take it for 10 days and 2x each day. This is probably the 5th or 6th time she has ever been on antibiotics in her life, she just turned 6 in September. Also was told to give the behind the counter childrens sudafed to help with the stuffed nose. We have been using afrin becasuse nothing else has helped. We tried the neti pot, sinutat and everything! Lastly I double checked and called two pharmacies to see if her being on topamax is okay to add the antibiotic and sudafed. All said okay. The sudafed actually worked! I just hate giving the medicine though. It has dye in it! YUK But she really needed relief, the poor thing. Just worried about this antibiotic and what I read...........HELP! Maybe I will call and try to change it....I don't know what to do...

Maybe I will call and try to change it....I don't know what to do... I give my son azithromycin (aka zpak and zithromax) daily and he is 4 years old and does not swallow pills. The azithromycin is horrible tasting, I could not even get a compounding pharmacy to flavor it so that I could swallow it! He takes it daily and what I do is crush the pills (the compounding pharmacy actually does this for me and puts each one in a capsule for individual use- but you could easily crush them with a pill crusher from the drug store). I make pudding (you can probably use store brand, he is on a very restricted diet so I make it from organic Dr Oetkers mix from Whole Foods). I basically bury a pile of the crushed pill in the middle of a spoonful of pudding- you can't mix it in because the taste is still horrific! Hope that helps- you can ask me more questions on getting it in your daughter since I have been doing this daily since September! Hope you all feel better soon!
myrose Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Hello Betty04 and thanks for your reply. The last time she had a antibiotic it was zith (liquid form) thats is where we had problems. We are not on antibiotics long term (never have been) This time around is for a sinus infection that just would not clear on its own. I asked for a pill form antibiotic. She has no problem swallowing pills at all. We did get a pill form but I have never heard of the anitbiotic before and didn't like what I read about it lastnight. Although they were adult reviews... I just wanted to know if anyone had any info or experience with this particular antibiotic. I hate trying new things I am always scared. Have a great day
myrose Posted January 27, 2009 Author Report Posted January 27, 2009 Well I was hoping more people had some info or comments on the antibiotic my daughter is on. Anyhow I think I should throw her a probiotic......she is on the antibiotic for 10 days.....what do you all think???
colleenrn Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 SMZ/TMP is a combination of two sulfa drugs, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim which is used to treat infections, such as bronchitis, middle ear infection, urinary tract infection, and traveler's diarrhea. It is also used for the prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). It is commonly known as Bactrim or Septra. It is active in vitro against many gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic organisms. They have minimal activity against anaerobic bacteria. Susceptible gram-positive organisms include many Staphylococcus aureus , including some methicillin-resistant strains, S. saprophyticus , some group A beta-hemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus agalactiae , and most but not all strains of S. pneumoniae . Gram-negative organisms that are susceptible include Escherichia coli, many Klebsiella species, Citrobacter diversus and C. fruendii , Enterobacter species, Salmonella species, Shigella species, Haemophilus influenzae , including some ampicillin-resistant strains, H. ducreyi , Morganella morganii , Proteus vulgaris and P. mirabilis , and some Serratia species. {104} Sulfonamide and trimethoprim combinations also have activity against Acinetobacter species, Pneumocystis carinii, Providencia rettgeri , P. stuarti , Aeromonas , Brucella , and Yersinia species. They are also usually active against Neisseria meningitidis , Branhamella (Moraxella) catarrhalis , and some, but not all, N. gonorrhoeae . Pseudomonas aeruginosa is usually resistant, but P. cepacia and P. maltophilia may be sensitive. It is a pretty heavy duty antibiotic, so I would definitely give a probiotic. It does have a lot of side effects, including making you very sensitive to the sun so you can burn easily. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim combination should not be used in the treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis since it may not eradicate streptococci and therefore may not prevent sequelae such as rheumatic fever. Dr. Kaplan (strep expert) says: sulfonamides do not eliminate strep from the throat (although they can be used to help prevent recurrent rheumatic fever).
