TS and anger?

I was wondering how many of you are dealing with anger and rage issues. My son has a really hard time containing himself. I don't know if we should try behavior therapy or just try to teach him some different options. If anyone has any insight on this please let me know and thanks in advance.

YES, our daughter has a lot of rage that comes on suddenly and she gets really angry. I mentioned this to our specialist in gainesville and she was explaining to me that these kids have a lot to bear and take on all day long. it is very frustrating to them. our daughter has a lot of separation anxiety and the dr's were saying if that is your world that is so much to hold in yourself when you have fear like that. she was on prozac for a while and i must say it helped, but we did take her off of it. look at what the rage is---is it due to lack of attention/unable to concentrate, etc...another great thing to do is find a qualified counselor to talk to yoru son. it's not always feasible with the out of pocket costs and finding a qualified therapist who can relate to your son and understand all of the issues that these kids have. i spent months trying to find a counselor who understood ts, ocd, anxiety and none were qualified. the ones that were qualified were so far from our house and/or were too expensive. alot of my daugther's rage is due to the anxiety and the distractibility she has---she gets so mad when she does homework and she gives up and has a fit and is so mean to me that i die inside! know you aren't alone!!!!

I was just coming on here to post something about rages, so instead i will speak to your posting. I do not understand the anger and rages my son has. He is 8, he was diagnosed with TS recently but he has always had severe behavior problems his whole life, including aggression. However, a couple years ago after doing a alot of work with him he really got himself together and stopped being aggressive. The past few months tho it is back, and it is a mystery. He will become violent almost out of nowhere. He is about to be, if not already, kicked out of his school because he is exploding at teachers. Today he socked one in the eye hard! I recently took him off his med, Abilify, but that was a few weeks ago now and the aggression was present while he was on it too. The only other thing he is on is Inversine, does anyone know if that could cause violence? Our psychiatrist told us that TS kid just have rages, it just is, nothing you can do. He also said there is no way the Inversine would cause it.

Do any others here have this issue?? I dont know how i will keep him in any school this way. He will also say horrible things to me that are so bad they are haunting. Otherwise he is the most loveable, sweetest boy. Do any of you worry that something else might be wrong, like bi polar or something? I am trying to get on the natural track, got him off the medication and we are looking to see Dr Murphy and a DAN doctor, but at this moment i am tempted to take our current psychiatrists advice and start Risperodol. I really dont want to do that!

thank you everyone on this board who takes their time to help others.

Thanks for the reply Amy1. I don't see any pattern to his anger except that is always directed at a person. You can do or say something to hime one day and no isues but the next time will flip him out. His sister really knows how to flare him up. She is 12 and we keep telling her to leave him alone but he can really get on her nerves. I know it has to be hard for her to understand what is going on with him. I'm afraid one day he might actually hurt her.

Hey Airbucket,

I don't believe my son is Bi-Polar. I know that is not uncommon for TS kids to have issues controlling their anger. I am trying to figure out the best way to deal with it without meds. I make him sit until he can calm down enough to tell me what as him so upset. I then try to explain why it isn't worth getting that upset over. I am concerned however because he is 11 and is often out of my sight playing with friends. He is a very little guy and the other boys are almost twice his size. I want to feel more secure that he will be safe.

hello Tsmommy -

my son is the same in that you can do or say something to him one day and he has no rreaction but on another day he freaks out. Dooes your son act "strangely" when he is being violent or in a rage? My son seems to go in another world, i cant talk to him, he wont answer me, he just seems like he has no idea what is happening and he goes plays with his toys. We have already in his life done SO much behavior therapy, but thats not what this is. Its not a conscious decision he is making to be in a rage, so i dont know what to do. Maybe we can find some answers and help each other out.

Amy1 - may i ask is your child in school? How does the school deal with this? Our school system wants to put my son in a class for kids with these explosive issues for safety reasons. I think its a real lousy idea to put a bunch of unpredictable aggressive or explosive kids in one room! I do wonder if the pressure all day gets to him, and if so what can i do other than homeschool him? School is pressure, it just is. I am curious what kind of classroom your child is in and how they handle the rages?

thanks.

passing by quickly so do forgive my nrief post

anger/rage/frustration etc are not necessarily part of TS but very often can occur as co-morbid conditions or as a result of unresolved issues related to the ts ie may not be co-morbid but rather resultant.

We were recommended that my son use lavender oil as a calminative. smelling one drop on a tissue or on wrist has always been very calming for him

also Bach's Rescue Remedy under the tongue if things are really bad, and a relaxing epsom salts bath

Leslie Packer's excellent website on Tourette Syndrome deals with behaviour issues and also a whole section on Rage attacks

here is the site map so you can easily find your way around there:

My son is only 5, but rage and aggression has been an issue since he was a toddler. It was my first sign that something was different about him. I never felt comfortable leaving him alone with other children during play time b/c he had a very short fuse. When he started with the tics last spring we put him on the Feingold diet and saw such an improvement in his behavior. The tics didn't go away, but he became a much more pleasant, agreeable, and kinder child. We are not on FG 100% anymore, but we have pulled out all artificial colors, additives, flavors, etc. He has stayed on green light everyday at school since he started K this fall, something that has NEVER happened in his past 3 years of preschool.

I am sure you have played around with your child's diet, so please don't think I'm suggesting that you haven't. I just wanted to respond to the post about aggression since that is something we have dealt with so much over the past 4 years with him. I will say that I am not looking forward to the upcoming school years as my son still does get easily frustrated and is quick to crumble up a paper rather than correct a mistake. He still has that short fuse and bad temper, it is just not something that we are dealing with every day (every hour) like we used to. I know I have a long road ahead of me, so if you find something that works for your child, please post so that I may take notes, lol.

Best wishes,

tlk

Just something I found interesting-I was looking up bipolar today and associated behaviors. Tics was one of them. Discusses rages and things of this sort. Just thought I should put out there that tics was an associated behavior. Rage was an associated behavior of Tourettes. Hmm..confusing.

My cousin is Bi-polar along with my aunt and he does not exibit any of their symptoms. He dosen't get mad at me or over school work, it is directed at his peers. It also has nothing to do with being mad fun of. It is purely random almost as if it were a tic. I know it is hard to explain over a computer but somehow it is different. If anyone knows what I am trying to say then please help me explaine it better. He is not Bi-polar or Autistic. He looks, acts and behaives normaly in almost every sense.

Do any of you live in Florida? If so where? I think it would be useful to meet other kids to see how different the disoder may present it self. I don't think that even the doctors have a full grip or understanding on what it is exactly.

Well thanks for leting me rant and sorry.

TsMommy,

I do live in Sw FL. Its interesting what you say because the aggression the past few months is new for us. he is reacting violently to somethng that normally he has learned to just express frusturation through talking and huffing and puffing. I wonder if it is a kind of "tic"? My son is not autistic either although he has social impairments, and i have no idea if he may be bi polar. It is the randomness and the unpredictability of the latest problem that has me really worried. Its like we cant find a real cause for it to justify such intense emotion. At this point I believe that some of our kids may have some complex neurological/biological problem that is more undefinable than we have presumed. I am trying to focus on the symptoms to try and put this puzzle together. So many parents report changes when diet or deficiencies have been addressed.

Id be happy to talk to you more about this and anyone who has similar issues. Thanks.
