Increase tics due to calcium and mag imbalance?

Need your expertise.

My son has gotton 11 chiro & CST treatments. And each time we go, his chiropractor says his muscles are tight and usually are the same ones. I am wondering if the muscle tightness has to due with the "CALCIUM and MAGNESIUM" imbalance. My son is not on any supplements other than vit C. and takes a daily Epsom bath.

About 2 months ago, i started giving him 4oz serving of yogurt almost everyday and that's about the same time when he started to have more frequent tics.

We eat mostly organic and a well balance diet. Since most people who have tics or TS tend to be deficient in magnesium and if my son is already deficient in magnesium, the EXTRA calcium my son is getting is further depleting the magnesium in his body which may explain why his muscles are so tight and not getting any relieve from the chiro & CST treatments. My son also have spring allergies, i am sure it add more stress to his nervous system.

Does that make sense?

Thx for taking the time to help me out.

Hi Patty,

I don't really know what the muscle tightness is due to. I'm taking calcium and magnesium and still have extreme muscle tightness. Last Saturday at acupuncture was the best cupping we've ever had. I ended up with 14 hickies--7 on each side of my back. I must have been really tight, but I'm not for sure why. I've had tons of exciting things come up & a few stressful things like finals. I too would be really interested in knowing what's causing so much tightness.

you mention yoghurt...have you checked the ingredients on it to be sure there is nothing but yoghurt in it...ie no artificial fillers or color or flavor?

it has always been my understanding that it is very important to try to balance calcium and magnesium intake in an approx 2:1 ratio

my son has had some muscle tightness, sinus pressure and light headedness lately, all seem related to the very very high pollen etc levels we have here currently due to a drought.

My son's chiropractor seems to think the muscle tightness is due to external factors since my son has allergies. The external stress can cause the nervous system to tighten up. I started 1/4 tsp of Kids Calm this Monday, and will be seeing my son's chiro this Sat.. We will find out what he says about his muscle tightness in a few more days. Will keep you guys posted.

I started my son with 1/4 tsp and just recently up to 1/2 tsp a day. My son takes it twice daily (1/4 in the AM & PM).

Our last chirop appt was last Saturday and he said he muscle tightness is better. He wants him to continue to be on it for another month since he feels that is the amt of time it takes for the body to rebalance itself assuming he is deficient in megnesium.

My son's tics is slowly subsiding also, esp his vocal. I am not sure if the chirop adjmt is finally kicking in or the magnesium! In any case, i am happy about that.

That is good to hear. I have increased our son Lawson, to one heaping 1/2 teaspoon in the evening. His bowels seem to be fine and I will probably increase it to two teaspoons over the next couple months. I don't know if this is what is causing his tics to practically go away, and I am hesitant to experiment and stop the Calm, but do I wish I could figure this out! As I mentioned earlier, we took him to the alergy specialist and nothing they pricked him with showed any reaction. I was thinking wheat, since my mother is an extreme Celiac, but wheat was tested, and showed neg. I was still curious to my question about calcium, do you think I should be giving some in tablet form? He doesn't drink milk, some soy and cheese, not sure if he is getting enough

imcqill,

You can also obtain calcium thru other source like vegetable. I do feel that it is essential to have sufficient calcium. I know calcium carbonate is not bioavailable and calcium citrate is preferred.

I hope someone here knows about calcium gluconate. Let's keep each other update on this.

BTW, is your son on any other supplements? or daily Epsom Bath?

Lenny,

My son had numerous environmental allergies, but I don't think any foods showed reactive with the conventional allergy testing.

They did a scratch test first, and then individual injections.

Then I had IgG food testing done, and he showed fairly strong reactions in the blood work, for many grains.

I also had the Pediatrician do the celiac test (in blood work). I'm not looking at the test result right now, but I think it was IgA Glidian antibody? It was negative.

I guess the point is, I'm pretty sure that you can not rule out a problem with grains, or celiac with the type of testing the allergist did.
