What questions are various research papers answering...?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I've been going through the various papers and trying to tease out what questions the researchers are actually answering. If you've been reading papers you think are signfiicant can you add to this list or send me a message regarding other questions/papers? I'm not looking for "review" articles, but rather people running experiments that are testing certain hypothesies.

Whether established OCD and/or tic disorders have exacerbations associated with treated strep infections in kids with Tourettes (not true PANDAS)?

[Kurlan 2008] Kurlan R, et al. Streptococcal infection and exacerbations of childhood tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms: a prospective blinded cohort study. Pediatrics. 2008 Jun;121(6):1188-97.

note: both of the above studies (2008 Kurlan, 2011 Leckman) used the same group of Tourettes kids. This is also the same group of kids as in my next comment (Singer 2008).

Whether anti-neuronal antibodies are diagnostic for PANDAS?

[singer 2008] Singer, et al. “Serial immune markers do not correlate with clinical exacerbations in pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections.”, Pediatrics. 2008 Jun;121(6):1198-205. NOTE we find out later the kids in this group were not true PANDAS, but garden variety Tourettes.

Thank you Neil Sweidy http://www.bostonglobe.com/magazine/2012/10/27/the-pandas-puzzle-can-common-infection-cause-ocd-kids/z87df6Vympu7bvPtapETLJ/story.html

"Most of the kids in the study resembled those he regularly sees in his clinic — children with “garden-variety” Tourette’s and OCD. But after working with more physicians treating PANDAS patients, he had come to see firsthand that there was a distinct group of kids who literally had changed overnight, with dramatic onslaughts of OCD and other symptoms. And these “true” PANDAS/PANS cases weren’t represented in his study in any meaningful way."

Your PM box was unable to accept more messages so I will post this here:

I am currently a volunteer data collector for a study that states "the purpose of the study is to understand the meaning of the PANDAS experience through a study of the language and metaphors used to describe the lived experience". thanks to both of you for keeping us all up to date!

I'm waiting for Drittan Agalliu's reseearch on repeated strep infections and effect on the BBB to come out From his site - "Agalliu D*, Nimmerjahn A*, Arac A, Perrino J, Schnitzer M and Barres BA. Development of reporter mice to image dynamic structural and functional changes in the mammalian blood-brain barrier in health and disease. (Manuscript in preparation)." His site read "in peperation" for months.

Wasn't there a doc doing PET scans on pandas kids ? Chugani (or somehting like that). I thought he was doing a study.

Cunningham is suppossed to have several papers "soon"..maybe you should leave a "manuscript in process note" in those sections.

Below is a review paper and you aren't looking for those- but I like the way it summarizes research in the area - and if you decided to put together something like EAMoms suggestion on the outcomes for each paper - there is a chart in there that might be a good model. Paper itself is good and talks alot about PANDAS (and I like that the researcher in the world of autoimmune world and taking a fair look at pandas and including it in their papers. Paper called Autoimmune Basal Ganglia Disorders

I wish there were more....

Don't count on Dr Chugani. If your child fits *his* criteria, you'll get the PET scan and treatment. If not, you are out of luck. No idea when he might publish. He's been doing the PET scan with a special tracer he formulated for several years now.

By his criteria, I mean his criteria of PANDAS. His PET scan has been negative for a number of kids known to have PANDAS.
