sf_mom
Has your DD been checked for Bartonella? Two things in your post that stand out to me: rages and 5 day increase in symptoms after starting Augmentin. Those that suffer from chronic Bartonella typically have rages as a symptom. Additionally, the growth/die-off cycle for Bartonella is less than a week. When the bacteria is active and wanting to multiple... that is the time antibiotics are able to kill infection hence growth/die-off cycle. If you hang in there with Augmentin you might be able to pick up on a specific cycle based solely on when she rages (at least that was true for our family). Our younger son had a rages every Wednesday morning for several months after starting Rifampin. Initially rages where very intense, lasted a long time and we could not reason with him. As treatment continued everything improved, intensity and length rages along with our ability to reason with him. Eventually, his rages become more of a mood liability issue but we could still pick up on cycle. If we were able to administer Advil prior to full on rage the intensity of episode was much less. We now use two natural anti-inflammatories: Enhansa and Maxi Flavone and rarely use Advil anymore to help with his inflammatory response. You might try Advil when she starts to look frustrated as a short term solution.
mama2alex
This could be a die-off reaction (herx). Are you giving her anything for detox?
4Nikki
That really helps, I've not heard of Bartonella but will look it up. DD had a urine test and it was positive for many types of bacteria. I will try to see if I can pick any descriptions up from the results. Forgive me for not knowing but I'm not sure what Detox is, I glanced at it before but though it was detoxification as in getting the drugs out of her system. If that is what it is then do you mean she should get any other meds out of her system so there is no contradiction to the antibiotics?
4Nikki
DD has 4 more doses left. Ibuprofin has helped to curb the rage but she has a lot of "brain fog" (not sure if I'm using the term correctly). She is trying to self manage but a lot of the time its like walking on egg shells. nicklemama
I would say its a die off reaction. My son had this at age 3 when given amoxicillan for an ear infection. We thought it was an intolerance to amoxi and he was not given any penicillin abx until diagnosed with PANS at age 6. After discussing his previous reaction, we decided to give augmentin a try. Lots of improvement. I can't say there was no rage reaction because he was already a raging mess at dx.
mama2alex
Forgive me for not knowing but I'm not sure what Detox is, I glanced at it before but though it was detoxification as in getting the drugs out of her system. If that is what it is then do you mean she should get any other meds out of her system so there is no contradiction to the antibiotics? Not a problem! I was in a hurry, so I didn't really explain myself. I was referring to detoxification, but not of other meds. When you give antibiotics, sometimes you kill off bacteria faster than the body can handle. When the bacteria die, they produce toxins and these need to be excreted from the body. Sometimes when this happens you can see a worsening of symptoms, which many here will refer to as a "herx" or "die-off" reaction. It can be helpful to use supplements (and other things) that help the body get rid of these toxins. Bentonite clay, charcoal, lemon water, exercise, homeopathic drainage drops, cholestyramine, and Burbur are all things we've used at one time or another to help with detox. Sometimes this is the only thing that makes the treatment tolerable. Edited May 10, 2013 by mama2alex
4Nikki
DD had a crying bout for about 15 mins and brain fog for about an hour. She kept opening her eyes wide and looking up. We have had a hard time getting her to wash her hair and its got tangles now in the back. When she was crying she would pull on tangles and pull out some strands of hair. I had to restrain and block her from doing it. She started obsessing over it saying her hair is falling our and she's going to go bald. She also would chock herself and say I can't breath. The lights bothered her whe she look up athough it was dim light I could see her eyes from her tablet light and I could only see about 1 mm of color the rest was her pupils. I read about checking to see if the pupils are dialiated, but I have no idea what that means if they are. I also don't understand why the light from a computer or tablet doesn't bother her but not the regular light does. Is all of this OCD? I'm not sure if this is part of the Agumentin battle or if it is related to the glutin free sugar free cookies she ate because the reaction time from the cookies is about right when she had sugar before.
