Bleach baths for Strep?

Recommended Posts

For several years I have been getting topical rashes. Incidentally it began when we moved to NC, almost 5 years ago. This is also when my son started getting Strep that at the time was unidentified. I noticed that he had a flare while I had another "heat rash" (this is what the docs call it as it is not a yeast rash - I assume because they have no idea what it is). Anyway, duh, it dawned on me that this is probably Strep. I have a long-standing relationship with Strep and my titres elevate in correlation with my son's. Anyway, I am really mad that I have been wandering like a fool for several years, not addressing this problem. Can anyone tell me what the ratio of H2o to bleach is appopriate for adult bathing, and how often should I take a bleach bath to try to keep thing incidious beast at bay? Any other precautions/remedies?

I am not sure about the bleach ratio for a strep bath however, my son has a pimple like rash that appears when he has a flare. We were told it was folliculitis and given topical antibiotics. We have used the topical antibiotics with little results. When given oral antibiotics, the rash will usually clear up in a few days along with reducing or eliminating his PANDAS symptoms. I consider the rash one of our early warning signs that he has a Strep infection and needs the oral antibiotics. Zithromax has cleared it up for us. I hope this helps.

My son also gets the pimple like rash and it is the early signs of pandas. he is already on zithro so the ped addes bactrim for 10 days and it clears it up and gets the pandas symptoms to subside or at least reduce dramatically.

ID doc told us a 1/2 cup to a full cup of bleach in your bath water 1 a week. Also said you can use hibiclens a wash every other day. Sold at your pharmacy HIBICLENS.

Its likely we are all seeing a form of impetigo and it does cause pandas. hard to get rid of. I have changed all the toilet seats door handles, disinfected, thrown out old purchased new, toothbruses changed every 2 weeks and it still comes back. Worst in the fall.

Thanks. I am amazed that I have seen docs for this embarrassing "rash" several times. Although they agree that it is not yeast after a culture, they go no further to diagnose, both docs calling it "dermatitis" (fancy for rash) or "heat rash", and telling me to wear loose clothing. What an amazingly apathetic medical community we have here in the Raleigh area - which is supposed to be one of the country's meccas for medecine. Hah! I have learned so much more from other parents and specialists out of state throughout the years of our PANDAS journey! I am at the point now in which some docs in this area are coming to me for info! I will add this one on to the list as a possibility - I think that Strep rashes may be rare, but not THAT rare!

You can also talk to Dr L about the bleach bath- an ID doc gave her a protocol to use for ds. Just can't recall it with enough certainty to comfortably pass along. My ds also gets the bag rash-- among others. And yes, pre-PANDAS it'd always been given some "eh, XYZ rash" dx. Still don't know what it is with any certainty but now we know it's something b/c of timing.

I am so glad to hear people talking about this. My son also gets "the rash" before a PANDAS episode. IT took us a while to connect the dots (no pun intended lol) and realize this was PANDAS related. He has eczema, but this rash is different...pimply like a heat rash over large amounts of his body. It ALWAYS preceeds a PANDAS episode for us. I am just a little hesitant to try a bleach bath because his skin is so dry as it is. Is there anyone else who has used this as a treatment? What were your results?

I didn't use it for the rash, so can't report-- sorry. Our PANDAS doc recommended it b/c ds had recurrent bouts with perianal strep. Will be interested to see if anyone has tried it for "the rash" we're seeing in our kids, though (I also connected those dots later on).
