Common Cold

Anyone have any advice for treating a flare up from a common cold? My son started with a sore throat that turned into a runny nose and a nasty cough. He went to the doctor and was negative for strep and ear infections (his usual trigger) but is having a spike in tics and emotional swings. Anyone have treatment ideas? Ibuprofin seems to help a bit, but would any ABX help? Should we just wait it out?

Ibuprofen and yes, I would try to get abx. Did he have a Strep test? My son's Strep after time morphed into low grade fever and common cold symptoms. Chances are it's not just a cold. Hope things get better quickly. -Kath

Strep test was negative. He is on prophylactic Azith every 3 days now, not sure if I should request a full dose of that or something else?

I cannot speak to that. I do not know any history. We have been thru so many flares over the years that i learned to wait them out. Sounds like perhaps your kiddo was recently diagnosed with PANDAS? Do you have a specialist that you can speak with or are you relying upon a pediatrician?

Mostly the pediatrician who has a limited knowledge base, but also Dr T. I just can't see paying $300 out of pocket for a phone consult every time we have a question.

Does anyone have recommendations of what to take for a virus?

Our whole family has passed around the flu these past two weeks. We are taking Tamiflu and regular over the counter meds for symptoms. Have not noticed a major flair yet..... And that is a big yet.... Don't know, just waiting it out. Our neurologist said that we probably would not see a big spike in symptoms with flu, but that is because strep is our most common trigger. I would suspect your son may have more than just common cold if you are seeing a huge spike. My son does not always test positive on those rapid tests. I am not sure I really trust them.

My sore throat and cough were mycoplasma. Have they checked for that?

He was checked for that about 2 months ago in blood work, but not recently. Wouldn't the 10 days of Augmentin he had clear that up, or is something else better for mycoP?

Some things that can help with viral infections are oregano, andrographis, l-lysine and zinc. Zinc and Vitamin C will help the immune system regardless of the strain of virus. The others are each effective against some viruses but not others. So results may depend on whether you hit upon the right match. I've personally had the best results with l-lysine.

The other thing that helps is xylitol. It inhibits reproduction of viruses as well as bacteria. You can find it some gums and in some nasal sprays - X-Clear being the easiest to find.

i know you're asking about pandas symptoms -- but if you're still having trouble with cough - i have found raw honey to be more effective than anything else.

Augmentin isn't effective against myco (something about the lack of a cell wall, so amox. and augmentin can't touch myco). Typically zithro or biaxin are the first-line choices against myco. Myco often presents as cold symptoms, and people mistake it as a viral illness. In most people myco is a self-limited illness that the body can rid itself of without antibiotics, but for those with immune problems/pans, it seems important to knock it out immdiately with abx.

I'm pretty much convinced now it is a mycoplasm infection due to his really bad, dry cough and this thing lingering for 3 weeks. We are going to see the pediatrician today. What is the test for mycoplasm? I know that can do a blood test for it, but is there any other way to test for it?
