LNN
Last summer, the family lobbied for a ready supply of water bottles in the fridge. Have to admit, it has helped increase their consumption and hydration, particularly DS, who goes thru 2-3/day. But I'm not crazy about whatever chemicals are lurking in the plastic. They don't drink with the same enthusiasm out of a glass or BPA-free water bottle (the kind that has a straw that admittedly gets poor suction). Something about the size of the opening and the ergonomics of the bottle, plus the convenience factor... Does anyone know of a similar, reusable bottle that is chemical free? We have metal bottles for hiking, but I'm told it's not the same. On a similar note - DS is approaching the age where he's going to need deodorant. I don't want to use one with aluminum but haven't been thrilled with Tom's brand. Anyone use a good one that actually works?
coco
Bumble and bee is a pretty good organic deodorant, at whole foods. My daughter likes it...altho using anything grown up makes her feel neat. She still has to really "scrub" under those arms these days.
MichaelTampa
I am very sensitive to perfumes, so the deodorant issue has been one I've spent some time on. I use the Thai brand deodorant stone. They actually have one rub-on style, but another spray style. I like the spray, because I know some went on. The rub-on, I can never tell. It doesn't smell. If smell isn't an issue, there are probably more options. But it is a clean product with some effectiveness.
MomWithOCDSon
Hey LLM -- I went through our vast re-usable water bottle collection myself a couple of years ago (after hearing Kenneth Bock speak at the AO conference, actually) and threw out anything that didn't specifically say "BPA-free" on it. And I'm STILL looking for replacements that everyone likes! Thus far, I've found one made by Thermos -- a model called "intak." It has a sort of "spout" drinking part on the top that's about the diameter of a typical one-time-use plastic water bottle, but it has this nifty clear plastic lid that closes over it and "locks," preventing it from spilling if the bottle is turned over. I'm 99% certain I got it at Target. It's become DS's favorite, but I haven't been able to find another one so that he could have one for home and one for school. You're now inspiring me to check on-line. As for deodorant, both DS and DH use Tom's, though DS prefers unscented and DH prefers the woodsy scent; it seems to work for them in turns of curbing odor, but since it's not also an antiperspirant, they do tend to get wet patches in the armpits of their t-shirts during the summer (TMI? ). Still, I'm with you on the whole aluminum thing.
MomWithOCDSon
As always, you're an inspiration to me! I found that water bottle . . . apparently it's available at Meijer and Amazon. Here's a link to the Meijer one: Thermos Intak BPA-Free Water Bottle I think I'm going to order a couple myself; summer's just around the corner! LNN
Thanks Nancy! I've seen something similar but wondered about the clean-ability. The one I saw had a sort of flexible straw/tubing at the top but I was concerned about being able to get it clean and also just how many times it would actually survive the bending of being opened and closed. Heading out Target-way tomorrow and will make a point of stopping in. As for Tom's - you're making me feel bad. If it nixes odor for your men-folk, what does it say about me that it doesn't make me feel "odorless?"

Yeah, there's no "straw" on these, and the spout's diameter is wide enough to get in there good if handwashing or for the dishwasher. Plus, the whole top screws off so that you can get into the spout and clean it from both sides. I've spent a little time with you in a hot, humid restaurant in a Washington, DC summer, and I picked up nary a whiff of "odor"! Methinks you're maybe a little overly self-conscious on the issue? (Or possibly my own stench was overwhelming my senses?!? ) But your organic finds look good! Maybe a local Whole Foods will carry some of those items and save you the shipping? As for whole foods - to get to my house, you go to the middle of nowhere and turn right. The closest whole foods is 40 min away "over the mountain". But there is one down the street from our LLMD - guess I may have to make a list before our next visit.

nicklemama
My very favorite water bottle (and the only one I will use) I bought at REI but i've also seen at Target. Its a Camelbak. It has a soft mouthpiece that you squeeze a little w/ your teeth and suck on. Its great. The spout folds down, so if it falls over, it stays clean. If it falls over w/ the spout up, it will not spill. DS has a decent one has Life Is Good and a little character on it that is BPA free. It has a cap that you flip up and just turn the bottle up and drink out of. The drawback is if the cap is up, it spills everywhere.
Mayzoo
I like the "Naturally Fresh deodorant crystal". It is a crystal that you get wet, and rub on. It forms a natural barriar against odor causing bacteria. It contains Natural mineral salts ( Ammonium Alum), Aloe Ver (Aloe barbadensis extract). Information: T-CCD International 800-653-4006 www.tccd.com So far as I know, the company is still in business. smartyjones
a couple of years ago, when i first got into coconut oil, i got products from an on-line company, tropical traditions. i believe the deodrant worked fine but it was quite wet. i did a google search and found some homemade recipes and a few possible products that i may try. LNN
Today I found the water bottle I've been looking for since I started this thread 6 months ago. In Joanne's Fabrics of all places! (guess it's a good thing DD7 has decided to give Halloween costumes one more year). It's also on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Copco-16-9-Ounce-Hydra-Bottle-Green/dp/B0088196OY It looks and feels just like a regular water bottle - something my son is so fond of that he won't use other types. He just likes the feel and ergonomics of drinking from a bottle instead of a straw. This one is BPA-free, sturdy and you can unscrew it in the middle, so you can add ice cubes etc. It also makes it much easier to clean. Multiple colors means the kids can tells which one is theirs. Wanted to pass it along...
