LEROY girls on the TODAY show this morning!

Gardasil is also recommended for males as well, starting at age 11, I think. We have boys in the elementary schools who have already been vaccinated with it.

What about the menigitis vaccine? That is also an older child vaccine. Does the fact that it is a vaccine related to the brain make it possibly more problematic for certain kids?

Can PANDAS be diagnosed with just tics? There is no doubt in my mind that these girls have an auto-immune/post infectious problem but is it PANDAS? And really, as the poster of this topic explained, we are only getting a tiny bit of the real story but I am not so sure about it being PANDAS. I don't want anyone getting upset with me. I only saw a few seconds of video, but I did not know that kids could only have tics and have pandas. I thought pandas was a whole lot more than that. I kind of thought OCD was mandatory. Then again, maybe that is really what pandas looks like. If that is what PANDAS really looks like then I am 100% convinced I am barking up the wrong tree in terms of my own son. If that video is pandas my son does not have it.

PANDAS can present differently in different kids. Dr. L & Dr. B both told us that. This is why we almost missed the signs in our other 2 sons. 1st son-OCD. 2nd son- night terrors, defiant, baby talk. 3rd son- anxiety, hyper, vocal and head tics...."torettes like"

But, I do get your point...if not triggered by strep, then maybe a different infection. Maybe it raises a good point to change the name to PANS - just think the "A" should continue to stand for Autoimmune and not Acute.

I am not so sure it is PANDAS either - but I am fairly certain that no one who is truly knowledgable about PANS has evaluated these girls - and if they have they have not shared any information with the parents (I do not think there is a PANS doctor that does not share information with parents). They certainly deserve a thorough evaluation.

P.Mom - I did not know that your older pandas son only had tics. I thought he presented with a personality change that looked like he was possessed. Perhaps I am confusing that symptom with your other pandas son.

Don't misunderstand me - I would recommend that these girls run to the nearest pandas specialist. They will get help from these doctors, for sure.

I suppose I learned something new today. I really, really thought OCD had to be present.

PhillyPA I think you bring up a very good point -- and the new term PANS rather addresses it, or so it seems.

Sudden onset being the KEY aspect of "neuro-psych." issues to qualify a child with this disorder (or am I missing something?)

No doubt these girls have been 'hit' with something, and if it was me I would be running to a neurologist who knew about PANDAS and was willing to treat.

--to at least try.

My daughter's symptoms were almost all severe tics and chorea/choreiform movements (shockingly similar to Thera on that video). No OCD. There was also a brief(about a week) period of some stuttering which coincided with sickness and went away with high dose zithro. Urinary problems twice. Virtually no psychological or psychiatric symptoms, but very clingy at night.

She presented like Sydenham's, but the Cunningham test said Pandas, ultimately diagnosed with both.

I am thinking a vaccine is involved too. Why else all the hush, hush from the health dept officials? They don't want the public to know which vaccine because they want parents to keep vaccinating their children. A vaccine, FluMist, set off my DS's first major exacerbation at age 5y9m. In hindsight, we now know he was displaying much milder symptoms, off and on, for 7 months prior to the FluMist. The symptoms of irritibility and being difficult, which were unlike him, were thought to be a phase. It was so mild it did not set off any alarm bells in us. We had no idea he was sick. It started after a double ear infection. Teens, by nature, are irritible and difficult, so how would you even know?

Philly...yeah, you are getting my boys mixed up. The younger had sudden onset ocd, tics, hallucinations, etc....yes, he seemed possessed. My older son, just a few weeks after my younger son presented, woke up with multiple motor tics one day. (after they both just had strep....positive via rapid) Because my younger presented first and so severely, we knew what had happened to my older son and he was given antibiotics within 3 days of onset and had 99% resolution of tics in 24 hours. His tics (he also had stuttering) waxed and waned over several years but never ever got as bad as at first presentation. (he never got strep again either) He has been tic free for over a year now. He never once showed any signs at all of OCD. No personality changes either like younger son....just tics.

Does anyone think that age of onset could have anything to do with the predominate tic presentation? (atlest that we are aware of...whether it be strep, vaccine, or vaccine damage meets strep)......
