URGENT AGAIN

Recommended Posts

The psychiatrist called me and wants to put my child in the hospital. I don't think it's a bad idea, but I fear they will screw her up even more, since nobody believes me that medications make her crazy and more pscho.

The psychiatrist keeps telling me that the severe reaction is her OCD waxing and waning. I told her.."then how do you explain, that when I stop the medication that I suspect makes her nuts, that the aggression goes away???"

Another doctor said, I don't think it's the meds making her nuts...I think it is the "act" of taking the meds. I told him that most times she does not know she is getting medication, since I hide it in Jello. MEDICATIONS MAKER HER RAGE AND GET VIOLENT FOR 12 YEARS. I AM REALLY VERY WELL QUALIFIED TO REPORT THIS, SINCE I AM HER MOM AND I HAVE KEPT COPIOUS NOTES FOR 12 YEARS, AND HAVE WITNESSES GALORE. UGH..... Give me advice!!!! They are looking at Columbia hosptiat in New York.

I would contact your pandas specialist....if they are supposedly your child's "treating doctor." Let them know what is going on, and ask that they contact the psychiatrist who is suggesting the hospitalization IMMEDIATELY, and that they be part of directing your daughter's course....BOTH the psych. and pandas specialist should be working together. You are currently being ACTIVELY TREATED for pandas, correct? With steroids, antibiotics, by Dr. B? Then he should be part of this treatment plan. If he can't work with another doctor on this, well, I just have my reservations about that ... a whole different animal.

Hi Wilma, I'm really sorry you are going through this ordeal. I don't know what medications she's taking other than the steroid, but is it possible to just take her off all medications for a bit to see where she settles out? Or just take her off the steroids and see if that helps? We did a 5 day steroid burst and that helped our son tremendously for a short while, BUT he got worse while on the steroids and didn't start getting better until he'd been off them for a couple of days. I disagree with some others who suggested keeping her on the steroid for 30 days when she is on the verge of being put in a psychiatric hospital (possibly because of the steroid).

Obviously you'd need to speak to your PANDAS doctor about this first, but it could be good just to check in with where she is without the medication(s), so you know if they are doing this to her or something else is. YOu can always put her back on anything that seems to actually be helping her.

Just a thought. You're in my prayers.

The doctor is taking her off of the Bactrim, since I think it is the one keeping her up til 6am, but I am not possitive. Could be the steroids building in her system too. We have to try somehting though. He is also raising steroid dose. It is so hard to figure out what was making her already severe insomnia worse. It's really tricky isn't it? Dr. B. has been pretty helpful. THANK GOD!!!

Wilma- They can come in and take your daughter and admit her against your wishes if they feel she is a danger. I think they do have to go through the court system, maybe by getting a judge to sign off. Be very careful. You do not want to lose control of her. There is a mother here in Michigan that recently made national news because she did not want her teen daughter treated w/ psych meds and the doctors disagreed and had her removed from the home. The mother was jailed because she used a gun to try and keep the police from entering her home.

I am so sorry things are heading south! How do you feel about all this? If you really think you cannot manage it at home, then I would consider it, but I would like to have control over what goes on in there. I've just heard too many horror stories from parents in this forum who deeply regretted admiting their kids. My question is, what would they do FOR HER there that cannot be done at home? Are they simply going to restrain her? Are they going to try other drugs? What is the plan?

Would it be worth jumping ship on the steroids and see if she settles down?

I am sorry to be throwing questions at you rather than giving you answers... You are in my prayers.

I am totally fine keeping her home. The psychiatrist keeps pushing it, because she gets these violent outbursts. The only time she gets physical with me is when they try psch. drugs on her, but the psychiatrist doesn't believe me. She said her severe OCD is what makes her violent. Not true. Her OCD gets her super agitated and impulsive, but not violent. She can be calmed with her OCD, but with the psych. drugs I lose her. I need a pdoc. that believes me.

The only thing I can suggest is to try to find a pdoc who is a DO (doctor of osteopathy). I have found that for some reason they are better at listening to patients than other docs. I have been through the ringer with psych docs.
