musicbuff
After a 5day course of Azith, 3-4 days after finishing the Abx course, I notice increased anxiety/OCD levels in my dd7. I have seen it atleast two times. Once in 2007, Azith was given for ear infection and 3-5 days later she had sudden anxieties for flies/bugs and after some 2-4 weeks, it subsided. This time, 3 days after 5-day course of Azith, her anxieties for objects being toxic or harmful if swallowed increased a lot with a wax-wane pattern and seems to be evolving with new worries. Does anybody have such an experience with Azith (or any abx) for their kids? MB kakrpa

Wilma Jenks
azith made my child bounce all over the place and run into the streets
Chemar
If you don't get azith without the red dye that is added to the Zithromax brand then it may also be the coloring that is causing the problems. Red 40 dye is kknown to be a problem for people with neurological issues. There are generic forms of azith that are white. Of course it may be a reaction to the antibiotic itself, or herxing... Priscilla
Highly likely it is a herx. I had tried my dd on zith at the start of our journey with PANDAS and thougth it was just making her worse so I took her off after 2 weeks. Almost a year later we found it was Lyme and added zith back in, when we did she was horrible within 24 hours and it lasted a week, then we started to see improvement. VickyLH
My son also had a horrible herx reaction for about a week when he first started Azith for PANDAS. We suspected he had intracellular strep lingering from a skin strep infection he had several months prior. After the first week he had the typical sawtooth recovery and gradual improvement over the course of the next few weeks.

MB oh yes. it made my girl bounce off the walls and get really violent. it was bad, but it helped with sleep in the beginning. she is being treated for bartonella and lyme. we have her on bactrim and minocylcine. dpet
We have had this as well. My ds was on generic zithromycin by the name greenstone, which I read recently on pandas network that Doctors are noting that it isn't working well. They recommend using sandoz or teva generics. Also we had the red 40 additive.
KnoraT
I posted in pandas section abt my 2.5yo's recent change in behaviors on Zithromax...his ocd is absolutely worst and he has some anxiety as well as stimming behaviors( he has PDD-NOS)....I'm not sure why though but like some ppl mentioned it may be due to color dye or antibiotic itself! Ladymavs
Azith originally was prescribed in our PANS journey back in 2013. WE stayed on it for several months and we actually saw good results in bringing down the OCD/intrusive thoughts almost immediately. Our issue turned out to be high myco p and it did bring it down 800 points in the first 5 months and we continued on for a few more months before going off. When we have had blips, we do to azith 500mg for 3-5 days and it seems to help. Last week, we did the same as we started to see a flare up of the intrusive thoughts, but it seems to be making worse. I don't know if it is herx, but we asked for a new antibiotic to see if it could go in an wipe out the rest of this myco p any more effectively. We are starting on biaxin this weekend. Anyone have any experience with this? Also, doing nasal spray, NAC, turmeric and vit c to help with inflammation. kakrpa
kakrpa
I have severe anxiety/OCD and azith seems to make me feel worse - i never seem to make myself take it beyond a few days. It just gets to bad I get scared to keep taking it. I'm considering minocycline as it's not only an antibiotic but also glutamate modulator (not sure on the exact science behind it). Some report it helping with OCD. Anyone used minocycline??
